"In the Paint"- In the City Emily Goodloe - 8/3/2009On a blustery, windy summer day, "In The Paint" participated in the Back of the Yards neighborhood block party, located between 50th and 51st street. A community club with heartfelt volunteers such as Maureen, Shaun, and Sandy. Their block club recognizes the need for children to have positive influences, and be involved in positive activities. They desired to have the children of the community meet positive role models, or adults that are doing positive things. Maureen stated, " Bonding between children and parents is important, and that's what this club is about. Bringing the children together as well as parents to build our community." With these values the recognized that "In the Paint" is one of those models, and therefore invited us to come back another year. Amidst the smell of barbecue, the sounds of music, the laughter of children, and the many other festivities, "In the Paint" transformed a section of the street into an outdoor basketball court. Coach Wayne and Coach Ken began teaching the children vital basketball skills: Stretching, conditioning, how to pass the ball, how to guard in the paint. As the children played a actual game using the skills they acquired, I decided to ask others how they felt about "In the Paint being there again..... "I like that "In the Paint" is here with the basketball hoops. I like that the children have adults showing them skills, and I'm happy "In the Paint" returned again this year." -Maureen "In the Paint showed me how to shoot a basketball. They taught me how to think first before making a basketball shot. I'm glad they are back." -Ishmael At the conclusion of the game, T-shirts and bags were given to the participants. In all it was an enjoyable experience. If you would like " In the Paint" to come to your special event contact Coach Mike Robinson at: coachmike@itphoops.com |
