Hello Kangs Family,
Well, it is that time of the year again to start thinking about the upcoming football season but first let me give you a few observations from last year. Although our record did not reflect the progress we made, there are some improvements worth mentioning. In any rebuilding process you have to start somewhere. My staff and I decided to start with the intangibles. Things like character, commitment, accountability and integrity. Over the course of the season, it became apparent to us that there was a considerable buy-in to this approach. We heard good things about our kids in the school from administrators and teachers alike. We also heard some of that same praise from people in the community and from opposing teams.
On the field the progress was a bit slower. This was to be expected. We had new coaches, a new system and we all had to learn to trust each other. All of those things take time to master. By the end of the season, the team seemed more committed to what we were asking them to do and they continued to work hard even though the season was not going the way we expected. All year long they played with intensity, effort and a willingness to sacrifice for the team. These are all important foundations that must be established in order to improve, progress and achieve.
LOOKING FORWARD
One week after the season ended I had at least 20 players banging on the doors to the weight room. As hard as I tried to tell them to take some time off, they tried harder and did a better job convincing me that they wanted to get going. Since then, we have had an average of 20-25 players working out 3 days a week with Coach Nuu. Before spring sports started that number was closer to 30. We have also welcomed some of the incoming sophomores to the workouts. I am very excited about the progress we have made in this area. It requires commitment, hard work and teamwork to establish such consistency. The staff and I are excited about the upcoming season. We have a great group of guys returning as well as a good group of newcomers to the program.
A lot of the work that goes into rebuilding a program cannot happen without the support and commitment of the booster club and the parents that donate their time and effort to fill in the gaps. I really appreciate all of those that played a roll in making my first year as head coach a very easy transition. It is important that parents get involved to help out. There is a lot of work to do behind the scenes. It always helps to have people willing to step up in order to help move projects along. If you have been in the program for a while, now is the time to step up and help out. If you are new to the program, find ways in which you can assist. It would be greatly appreciated by the booster club, our coaching staff and the team.
Thanks,
Coach Roberts
