Kansas Cougars Mission Statement

Kansas Cougars Vision
Our vision is to assist young at-risk men in maintaining football playing skills, regaining educational elegibility and returning to formal institutions of education, thereby building stronger, safer communities.
Our History
General Manager and Owner Marcel Wash, who played college at Southeastern Oklahoma State (Durant OK), Ottawa University (Ottawa KS) and Friends Unversity (Wichita KS), entered his current professional career in corrections and field of substance abuse counseling in 1999. Mr. Wash's achievments in college football include: 1st running back to rush over 100 yards in 5 years at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and 2 time All American at Ottawa University.
His love of football and his passion to help at-risk populations and turn their lives around came together in 2006, resulting in the formation of the Kansas Cougars minor league footabll team.
The Problem
Many young men with natural and attained skills in football experience a premature end to thier football careers due to disrptions in thier education.
How many promising young players have you seen drop out of or be expelled from High School or higher levels of learning? What happens to these young men following educational disruption?
Far to often the answer is a continuing downward spiral into social isolation and disenfranchisement, and escalation in the use of substances and/or alcohol, , low-paying "go nowhere" jobs, joblessness, homelessness, and in the worst case scenarios, the beginnings of a criminal career.
The Solution
Social science researcch provides the solution to minimizing risk for these young men and them to return to lives of achieving sucess. It is critical that young men at-risk stay involved in positive activities, experience meaningful conections in the community to prosocial role models, make and pursue goals and recieve positive reiforcement along the way. Involvement in Minor League football provides a setting in which this can happen.
In the 2008 season, 11 of players went on to play for colleges!
"I would not have made to college without Coach Wash and the Cougars supporting me"!
Preston Spenser (2007 Defensive End)
Joe Bryson (2008 Offensive Tackle) states, " The Kansas Cougars helped encourage me to move forth with my goals of obtaining a college degree while pusueing my athletics".
In 2009 the Cougars assisted 6 players in finding Full-time employment and helped enroll 2 players in a GED program!
