6/3/2009

Mat Taube drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning to give the Kitchener Panthers a 10-9 win over the Leafs Wednesday night at Christie Pits in one of two games played in the Intercounty Baseball League.

The Panthers (4-4) pounded out 15 hits and blew a five-run lead, but managed to scrap out a run in the top of the 10th to finally end the three hours, 24 minute marathon and send Toronto's record to 5-4. Kitchener improved to 4-4.

Toronto trailed 6-1 and 8-3 before rallying with four runs in the seventh inning and one in the ninth on an RBI single by Brian Ivan. But the Leafs left two runners on in the ninth and the Panthers got the timely hits they needed in the 10th.

Reliever Wes Koch pitched two innings or relief for the win, allowing the tying run in the ninth but that was it. Toronto reliever Jon Lockwood was the loser, allowing one run on three hits over two innings, striking out five and walking two.

Taube had three hits and four RBI for the Panthers, while Curtis Young had three hits and scored three runs. Mike Winter added a three-run homer in the second inning.

Kern Watts had four hits for the Leafs and also scored three runs. Tony Lewis had two hits and two RBI, Dan Gibbons added a pair of hits and drove in one and Damon Topolie added a solo homer for Toronto.
