UPDATE:  MARCELLUS EARNS FIRST ROUND HOME PLAYOFF GAME AND WILL FACE SOUTH JEFFERSON ON FRIDAY, OCT. 23, 7:00 PM ON OUR TURF !!!

Some of the greatest race horses in history were slow out of the gate but turned it on somewhere in the race to leave their competition in the dust.  This year's Mustangs look to be that kind of champion as once again the Green Herd started slowly - falling behind to Skaneateles 6-0 in the first quarter - but roared to life in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to end with a dominating performance!

After taking a slim 14-12 lead into halftime, Marcellus exploded in the second half for 28 points (21 in the 3rd quarter) while completely shutting down the Laker attack.  It's a pattern the Mustangs have repeated all year and while it causes some cardiac moments for fans it has produced a string of 4 impressive wins in a row and a home field playoff berth.

Derek Belvito caught only 2 passes but tallied a game-best 80 yards and made both catches count with 2 TDs.  Chaz Hayes pulled in 4 catches for 77 yards and 1 TD.  The team's leading receiver, Dan Rudy, battled through flu-like symptoms to catch 2 passes for 48 yards.  When the final whistle blew, QB Will Fiacchi had passed for 221 yards and 3 TDs, adding another TD rushing.  That brings Fiacchi's season passing yards to just a touch under 2,000 yards on the regular season.  Ricky Alfreds got 79 yards on 11 carries and 2 TDs while Jeff Ames picked up 59 yards on the ground with 6 carries.   Brendan Carey went 6 for 6 on extra points and just missed a 39 yard field goal that had a lot more leg in it.

On the defensive side, Niko Wagner had the breakout sack game we all knew he would eventually produce.  Wagner bagged 3 QB sacks; followed by John Howard with 2 sacks and Sam Schneider with 2 sacks.  Zach Wiley added 1 sack to the evening and 1 fumble recovery to go with his 3 solo and 6 assisted tackles.  Jason Howard led all tacklers with 2 solo and 11 assists.  Steve Brissette put 4 tackles in the books along with 1 interception to take his season total of picks to an impressive 3.

Some video clips need no caption ... as Zach Wiley demonstrates!

Marcellus handed cross-town rival Skaneateles its seventh loss of the season in a game that is big every year.  The win means Marcellus finishes the regular season with a 5-2 record (3-1 in conference) with head-to-head tie breakers over Solvay and Homer that gives us a second place finish in the Class B West Division.  It also sets up a fantastic first round home playoff game this Friday against South Jefferson (who finished 3rd place in Class B East Division).  The Spartans will travel to Marcellus Friday night in a game that should be another electrifying contest.  Marcellus beat South Jefferson in Week 4 in the final minute of play.  There's that race horse mentality again ... keep 'em in your sights until you blow past them at the wire!  Let's hope this week's rematch is a lot less of a nail-biter for Mustang fans!

Marcellus is on a roll, playing some of the best football they've offered in years.  This offense is dangerous, this defense can get stops and add in a special teams element that can change momentum and you have a team that no one wants to play in the playoffs!  Get ready for a great post-season -- we have places to go and we're ready to get there!

Great job finishing off the Lakers ... now we have bigger fish to fry!  Let's get at it ... the real season is HERE!

GO MUSTANGS!
