The Start of Something Great ...
In 2006, building on the achievements of the past, we start a new tradition of formally recognizing young men who set the standard of excellence on the Mustang varsity football team. These outstanding athletes exemplify "4 Pillars of Excellence" that are the hallmark of a competitive, quality athletic program - leadership, heart, performance and respect.
The four players, chosen at the end of the season as recognized by peers and coaches, each receive a special engraved Mustang statue. These special Awards recognize sustained and exceptional efforts by four of the very best young men in the Mustang varsity football program and set a standard for future players.
STALLION: This award is presented to the varsity football player who most consistently demonstrates the ability and willingness to accept responsibility, make critical decisions, build strong teamwork, lead by example and inspire others to give maximum effort despite the odds. Strong, visible and effective leadership - on and off the field - is the first pillar of excellence.
IRON MAN: This award is presented to the varsity football player who most consistently demonstrates a champion's work ethic, an indomitable toughness of mind and body, an undeniable commitment to improving themselves and their team, and whose example inspires others to reach higher. The heart of a champion and a relentless will to win is the second pillar of excellence.
ICE MAN: This award is presented to the varsity football player who most consistently demonstrates the cool, calm presence to perform under pressure, make the big play, rise to the challenge and whose dependable, trusted performance time and time again inspires others to believe in victory. Performance under pressure is the third pillar of excellence.
GRIDIRON: This award is presented to the varsity football player who by a consensus of the coaches consistently epitomizes the very best of what the game of high school football is all about to include sportsmanship, enthusiasm, optimism, scholarship, and, most importantly, respect - of self, teammates, coaches, school, community and of the game. Respect is the fourth pillar of excellence.
Standing nearly 12" high and 12" wide, this beautiful bronze-finish statue will be presented to 4 young men who set the standard for Marcellus Mustang varsity football excellence.
