* DODGERS FIRE BACK AGAINST NY BRAVEST 7/23/2009
The Dodgers played one of their most exciting games of the year when they squared off against the FDNY Baseball team at St. John's University on Wednesday July 22. The Bravest had Midville shut down through 7 innings, getting out of some tough jams when the Dodgers threatened to score in the first half of the game. With their backs against the wall, the Dodgers clawed back into the game, displaying the grit and resiliency that has made them one of the most competitive teams over the last 6 years. The bottom of the 8th would have the Dodgers score 6 times after being down 5-0 through 8 innings.
A lead-off walk to Mike Forthofer followed by a single from John Pratt set the stage for the Midville rally. Shortstop Pat Sheehan also walked to load the bases with one out. Centerfielder John Digregorio stepped up to the plate and smashed a line drive that would sail over the centerfielder's head for a double to put the Dodgers on the board 5-3 and give them life.
Catcher John Billera walked, and both he and Digregorio would advance to second and third on a wild pitch. Dave Dinkelacker sinlged in DiGregorio to give the Dodgers their fourth run and bring Midville within one run at 5-4. Biagio Governali stepped up next and delivered the game tying single, as Billera scored. Midville called upon John Sarkis to get the job done. Sarkis, who has been one of the hottest hitters of the season for the Dodgers delivered an opposite field line drive single to put Midville up 6-5 and take the lead for the first time the entire game.
The Dodgers never looked back as they handed the ball over to closer Jon Anatra. After striking out two out of three in the top of the 8th, Anatra was asked to get the final three outs of the game in the top of the 9th. With all his pitches working, Anatra struck out the side to pick up the win and give Midville a much needed victory over one of the toughest teams in the NYCMBL.
