The Myers Park Rugby Football Club is a self-funded, non-profit organization whose purpose is to grow and teach the game of rugby at the youth level. The club is affiliated with Myers Park High School as a club organization and provides no varsity status at this time to its players.
The rugby club was founded in 2002 by Myers Park students that had previously been playing with the Union County Lions Rugby Club. In looking for a coach, Dean Boylan, a Charlotte Rugby Club member of 20+ years, stepped up and volunteered to become the team's first head coach. Over the first 5 years in existence, the club experience many ups and downs, mostly as large, dedicated groups of students graduated. The one thing that did remain constant throughout the first years, was that the club increased its level of play each year through the strong leadership of Coach Boylan.
After 5 years of service, Coach Boylan turned over the head coaching position to Thomas Connor in 2007. Coach Connor came to the club with 12 years playing experience and a strong background in club management and leadership. And with his clear vision to build Myers Park Rugby Club into a championship club, and take their position at the cutting edge of high school and U-19 rugby in North Carolina. The first step, would be to grow the club's membership from 15 to 45+ players. After reinforcing the club numbers, the next step would be to develop a core of professional coaches and staff members to support and train the club. Coach Frank McKinney was Coach Connor's first and only choice to become the club's Tactical Coach. Coach McKinney brought over 17 years of high level playing experience, including many years with the Super League, as a member Charlotte Olde Originals.
Coach Connor's first two years as the head coach came with great success, as Myers Park would finish as the 2008 and 2009 North Carolina U-19 State runner-up. This would be the most successful two seasons in the club's short history.
For the start of the 2009 season, we are proud to announce that it was the inaugural season for the Myers Park Lady Mustangs. With there hard work they reach second in North Carolina Ladys U-19. With this year's crop of talented players and a staff of dedicated coaches, the Myers Park Rugby Club looks to be a powerhouse for the upcoming 2010 season.
Players and coaches will come and go from our club, but once you have worn the Green, Black, and White of the Myers Park Rugby Football Club, you are a life long member of our rugby family.
