Naz Corners Kearney

Just as citizens need to break the piggy bank to pay taxes, fans can depend on the Nazareth Lasers shutting out Bishop Kearney.

Like so many games before, Bill McKee’s Lasers held Kearney without a goal. Unlike previous contests, the followers of the Blue and Gold experienced some tense moments in the second half.

Senior captain, Janine Swanson tallied for the first time this season as the Lasers downed the Kings 1-0 in a Private-Parochial League match up at Bishop Kearney, Tuesday night.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue and Gold opened the second stanza with immediate pressure that resulted in a corner kick. Melissa Ercoli delivered the cross from the right side, and Swanson deftly touched the ball with her left foot over the outstretched arms of the Kearney keeper, Kristen Bartholomay.

The goal, the nineteenth of Swanson’s career, was an unlikely one considering the countless chances Nazareth had throughout the match. Swanson, along with teammates, Emily Kelly, Harley Cleary, and Biannca Bullard all had point blank opportunities turned away by Bartholomay. Many of the chances were line drives while Swanson’s tally came as a lob that fit just under the cross bar.

In all Naz outshot Kearney 37-9 with Bartholomay making 20 saves. Despite all the chances Naz had all they could handle keeping Kearney at bay.

Nazareth’s defense showed up when needed. Lauren Kelly came from thirty yards away to stop a possible breakaway. Sara Hart-Predmore, Brianna Pettinaro, and Haley Swanson all took turns stuffing Kearney chances.

Anna Brado continues to progress. The freshman created several threats from right midfield.

Megan Kane made six saves for the shutout.

With the win Nazareth improves to 4-2 and have held the Kings without a goal since the 2006 season – a streak of six games.
