The club began in 1997. It was started by a young man by the name of Kevin Boughton and his father who were both active in the sporting community in Newmarket. The club was nursed along with the help of Ian Hennigar, the then director of the Ontario Speed Skating Association, with a very small membership. A couple of years later the unlikely team of Don Ego, a retired Book Binder and former motorcycle racer and official, and Bill Allen, a Filmmaker, Contractor, and hockey and soccer coach, teamed up to run the organization.
They managed to get Todd Landon, the now Director of OSSA, and Elizabeth Dier, a local skater who now lives and trains in Calgary, to set up the coaching program. The club began to grow despite being one of the best kept secrets in Newmarket and surrounding area. As more skaters got involved in competition Trudy Corbett signed up to become our Meet Coordinator and Carol McCreesh of McCreesh and CO helped us with accounting issues. With a grant from the Trillium Foundation the club acquired a skate inventory for our young skaters and safety equipment to help in its expansion.
The club continues to grow with the help of new young skaters and their parents and it has a bright future with its base of steady adult recreational skaters. On the tenth anniversary of its inception with the help of The Newmarket Parks and Recreational Department and The Town of Newmarket the club will move to the newly constructed Olympic size rink in the new Magna Centre. We will expand the skating and coaching program with the help of head coach Paula McConvey and her team of assistant coaches and involved parents.
As the years have passed Todd Landon, Trudy Corbett, and Carol McCreesh haved moved on and new volunteers have replaced them. Shari and Frank Campbell have taken over accounting, Peter and Tracey Lee have taken over short track meet organization, and Margie Regan has taken on long track meet organization. George Simpson has become press secretary and in addition, a parent advisory board has been established to help co-ordinate events as the club continues to grow.
