About the New York ExpressTeam History (with all-time roster below) In January 2006, the New York Express came together through cyberspace and the enthusiasm was so great that two teams were formed: The New York Express, which was considered the A team, and the Midnight Express, or B team. As expected the New York Express got off to a strong start and the Midnight Express were hapless, starting off 4-10. But by the end of the season the Midnight Express passed the New York Express with a six-game winning streak and went to the playoffs with a 15-17 record. Against the heavily favored Red Sox, the Midnight Express split the first two games to force a game three. The Midnights were staging their comeback when the 9-inning game was called by league officials due to a time limit, depriving the team a chance to go down fighting.
The Midnight Express was led by a pair of sluggers, Bob Schwalb and Daniel Estevez, and Brad Horowitz was the staff ace.
The New York Express featured Mike Azark, Jason Wertheimer and Chris Fuentes. Starting in Fall Ball, the two Express teams united under Midnight Express Manager Dan Trotta and the franchise has gone on to three more playoff seasons in the Metro League under the name New York Express.
2007
The Express went 15-18 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Bob Schwalb again was the offensive star, backed up by strong seasons from Mike Azark and Chris Fuentes. Fuentes went to the all-star game along with Schwalb. Lenny Nieves solidified the starting rotation.
That offseason, the team played Fall Ball in the Parade Grounds League, recruiting a number of new players who would help the team to its most successful season ever.
2008 The Express went 20-12, won the Manhattan Division and defeated the New York Beers in the playoffs, but then lost to Skyscrapers in the Manhattan-Bronx conference championship. The 2008 season got off to a slow start but the Express came on strong, tying a franchise record with a six-game winning streak that included sweeps of the division rival Beers and the Storm, then in first place in the Queens Division. Other highlights included sweeping a doubleheader from the Skyscrapers with nine and only nine players and defeating the Downtown Bulls on the final weekend of the season to clinch Manhattan Divison title. In the first round of the playoffs against the red-hot Beers, the Express lost Game 1 and then came back to win Game 2 in a doubleheader at Roberto Clemente State Park. That forced the teams to come back the next morning for Game 3, which the Express won in extra innings on a base hit by Bob Schwalb.
Then came the greatet disappointment, losing to the Skyscrapers in the next round of the playoffs. The Skyscrapers advanced to the championship series, losing to the Elmjack Blue Jays by one run in the deciding Game 5.
Mike Reznick and Adrian Santiago led the pitching staff, with Reznick throwing four shutouts and one no-hitter on his way the Manhattan-Bronx Cy Young Award. He went to the all-star game along with slugger Daniel Estevez and shortstop Mike Azark, with Manager Dan Trotta named co-manager of the all-star game by virtue of the team's strong record. Phil Clemente was nominated for the league MVP award after leading the team in batting average, slugging and on-base percentage. 2009
Once again, the Express posted one of the best records in the league, going 20-11-1 to finish second in the Manhattan Division and earn a playoff spot, only to lose in the first round. The 2009 team added star players like Carlos Quintana, who was a unanimous selection to the all-star game, and Fred Polsinelli, who led the team in average, on-base and slugging. Julio Velez added extra-base pop, and Edward Chernick joined Santiago as co-ace of the staff. Santiago went to the all-star game and was nominated for the Cy Young award. Mike Polsinelli and Jason Wertheimer also turned in stellar offensive years.
