BRYC TeamHarkes Elite and BRYC '95 Elite Connection
John and Cindi Harkes formed TeamHarkes Elite girls soccer team under BRYC in the Fall of 2004 with 12 girls filling the roster. Since then, the team has grown and strengthened to a roster of 16 dedicated soccer players. In the Fall 2008, John and Cindi began new teams in a neighboring soccer club and discontinued sponsorship of their flagship, BRYC team and TeamHarkes Elite changed its name to BRYC '95 Elite. John and Cindi remain actively involved in youth soccer with their children's teams and actively supportive of the girls BRYC '95 Elite players.
TEAMHARKES TeamHarkes sponsors soccer teams nationwide with an emphasis on individual development, team play and precision passing. Starting with teams in John's hometown of Kearny, NJ, TeamHarkes has expanded into the Northern VA, DC area and is now involved with coaching as well as the sponsorship of local teams in the Braddock Road Youth Club. TeamHarkes formed it's Soccer School for Girls in 2004, and most recently developed a Soccer Academy for Boys, where kids can develop the basic fundamentals of the game through a competitive but fun environment. John has one of the most glittering resumes for an American-born soccer players.
He received his first full international cap on May 23, 1987, playing against Canada and went on to earn 90 caps and scored six goals for the United States Men’s National Team.

He was one of the most influential figures in the midfield for the United States Men’s National Team throughout the 1990’s and served as the team’s captain in 1995.
In his professional career, John was one of the first Americans to travel overseas and succeed at the highest levels in the England. Harkes became the first American ever to play in England's Wembley Stadium when he helped Sheffield Wednesday capture the League Cup title over Manchester United in 1991. He was also the first American player to ever play in the F.A. Cup final and the first to score in a League Cup final, performing both feats in 1993 while playing for Sheffield Wednesday FC. He was also the first American to play in a UEFA Cup match in 1992.
In 1996 he decided to return to the United States and join the newly founded Major League Soccer. John became the captain for D.C. United and led them to back-to-back MLS Cup Titles in 1996 and 1997. He also led D.C. to the 1998 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and the Interamerican Cup championships. John was then acquired by the New England Revolution in 1999 and played two and half seasons with the Revolution. John was traded to the Columbus Crew in the middle of the 2001 season and he decided to call it a career following the 2002 season with the Crew. During his MLS career, he scored 16 goals with 42 assists in 167 career appearances (155 as a starter), with an additional 22 playoff appearances as a starter (six assists). Harkes also played in five MLS All-Star Games (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000).
He started his professional career with the USISL's Albany Capitals.
John attended the University of Virginia and was honored with the Missouri Athletic Club Award as the top Division I college soccer player.
In 2003 he was honored with a star at the U.S. Soccer Star Plaza at the Home Depot Center. He also starred in the movie The Game of Their Lives as Ed McIlvenny, a film about the United States’ historic 1-0 victory over England in the 1950 World Cup. John is currently serving as D.C. United’s Director of Youth Development.
Hall of Famer Timeline: John's career kicked off after he was selected as the Missouri Athletic Club's college player of the year in 1987 and went on to succeed at the highest levels in England.
Since retiring in 2002, John has worked as the Youth Developmental Director for D.C. United, as a soccer commentator for Comcast SportsNet and as a color commentator for ESPN and ABC during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In 2005 John Harkes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame along with Marcelo Balboa and Tab Ramos.

CINDI HARKES |
BRYC’s own Cindi Harkes was inducted into the VA DC Hall of Fame yesterday at the VYSA Workshop in Richmond, Virginia. She was inducted under the Player category.
Cindi Kunihiro Harkes played with the Braddock Road Youth Club from U8 to U19. Her team (BRYC Galaxy) was VA State Cup Champ for three of those years. She was a member of the State and Regional U12, U14, U16 and U19 ODP Teams and was named to the U19 Youth National Team. she was a four year starter at WT Woodson HS, made All-Met the last three years, and was named Woodson "Athlete of the Year" her senior year. Cindi was a four year Varsity starter at the University of Virginia where she made the All-ACC team for three years and was an NCAA Academic All-American. She played overseas with the Sheffield Wednesday Ladies and the Stanton Rangers. Cindy played professionally with the National Champions Maryland Pride and won three USASA National Championship titles with her club team, SA United. Cindi, is co-founder of the TeamHarkes Soccer School for Girls summer camps.
