 Warriors roar pass Rays to pick up 2nd Victory; College players return. 4/5/2009 The Warriors defeated the Brooklyn Rays in a 12-1 mercy rule victory. The game was slated to go 9 innings after rain pushed the scheduled Saturday doubleheader to a one game Easter Sunday affair. Starter Carl Weber pitched 6 masterful innings picking up the victory. The southpaw recorded 11 strikeouts while allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run. The game also saw the temporary return of college players Flavio Garcia, Danny Lopez, and Jeffrey Lagares adding punch to an already potent lineup.
CF Garcia spearheaded the offense landing the game’s first blow with his first inning grand slam. Garcia finished the game with 5 rbi’s while catcher Norberto Jorge, hobbled with an ankle injury, homered in his second straight game going 2-for-3 with 2 rbi’s and 2 runs scored. SS Angel “Louie” Otero went 2-for-3 with an RBI while adding 2 runs to his team-leading run total. Jeff Appelbaum effectively ended the game when his 6th inning, 2 RBI hit increased the Warrior lead to 11 runs. The Rays were unable to put anything together in the bottom of the inning and the game was called.
Warriors squander huge lead; pick up win on Opening Day.
In what should have been a perfect day the Warriors blew a 10-3 last inning lead in game 1 of their Opening Day doubleheader versus the NY Storm. The game ended in a 10-10 tie due to league time rules. Several defensive miscues ruined a strong pitching performance by starter Russ Furey who recorded 10 strikeouts while allowing 1 earned run in 6 2/3 innings of work. Catcher Norberto Jorge went 1-for-2 with a homerun and 2 RBI’s leading the Warriors offensive attack.
The Warriors managed to salvage the day winning the back end of the set by a score of 7-2. Starter Greg Daniec hurled a complete game while scattering 6 hits and allowing only 1 earned run. Manager Steven Ramos went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and Furey, who started the game at catcher, went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. Kenric Tom added 2 crucial RBI’s during the team’s 4-run 2nd inning.
