On Friday, Mud Hens’ director of operations Richard Reed announced that your favorite Mud Hens baseball players will soon be brought to the comic book world in an anime series entitled “Hajime no Mud Hens” (“Mud Hens’ Road to Glory.”) The collaboration between Mud Hens management and Tatsunoko Productions is expected to raise the international profile of the NYCMBL front runners, and will likely spur merchandising fees overseas.
“We’re very happy to have reached an agreement [with Tatsunoko]” explained Reed at a press conference at the Zone Sports Bar in Astoria, Queens. “We think that as a product and a brand, the Mud Hens can be just as popular as the New York Dragons or the Detroit Shock.”
While no designers or artists have yet been attached to the endeavor, some plot details have leaked in the past few weeks. Tentatively, the 8-part series is said to center around the many characters comprising the Mud Hens baseball club as they compete in a high stakes baseball tournament that might well determine the fate of the world. Standing in their way are numerous opponents—and Dr. Shasky, a shadowy underworld figure whose crime syndicate is hoping to use the tournament as a showcase for its’ genetically enhanced race of baseball playing mutants.
“It’s got baseball, it’s got adventure . . . It’s got everything you want from a story,” says Hens’ first-basemen Ara Melikian, who appears in the comic as the sullen-yet-dependable ‘Arrow King’. “I think this is going to be a big hit!”
