OAKVILLE SPEEDSTERS QUICK OFF THE START
Oakville Speed Skating Club members have again had a strong start to the
competitive season.
A group of Oakville skaters participated in the October 10th - 12th Oktoberfest Meet in Calgary, Alberta. There were many personal
best times achieved and Ryan McAnuff joined the Sub 50 club by
skating the 500m race in less than 50 seconds! The same weekend, Patrick Duffy travelled to Sherbrooke, Quebec for an elite meet in which he was the only Ontario skater invited.
On October 18th and 19th ten Oakville members competed in
Rochester, New York with great results. Two medals were brought
home by Patrick Duffy - 2nd and Erin Heidecker - 3rd.
Also on October 18th and 19th Oakville was represented by 43 of the
169 skaters participating in the London, Western Regional # 1 Meet
in Strathroy, Ontario. The Club had an outstanding showing, with
17 top 5 finishes and two members achieving a perfect score. Our medal
winners include: 1st place to Kathleen Gildea, Conor McNamee, Quinn
MacHattie, Blake Sullivan, Mitchell Kothleitner (perfect score) and
Evan MacHattie (perfect score); 2nd place medals went to Cassandra
Boychuk and Tiago Santos and 3rd to Sean McAnuff and Sean Stewart.
Connor Millar, Erin Stewart, Rachel Van Gemert, Mathieu Masaro and Gabriel Patron each placed 4th. Zubin Khan and Sydney MacDonald placed 5th. Congratulations to three of our Club members who skated the 500m
time under 60 seconds for the first time! Brett Sullivan - 57.92
Evan MacHattie - 59.21 and Joshua Sullivan - 58.45.
Special congratulations to Oakville Speed Skating Club member
Emma Hobson who has been selected to compete at the prestigious Elite
meets in Quebec. Emma achieved this honour through hard work on the
ice and off ice training.
These early successes give good momentum to a hard working club
as they look toward future competitions.
