ABOUT THE OAKVILLE SPEED SKATING CLUB

The Oakville Speed Skating Club began as a Town of Oakville Park and Recreation Program in the 1994-1995 winter season.  Originally, the Club had 20 members, one hour of ice per week, very old speed skates on loan from the Ontario Speed Skating Association, and no safety mats. A few years later, the Club became an independent short-track speed skating program.

Today the Oakville Speed Skating Club has developed into one of the largest and successful Clubs in Ontario, with over 140 skaters, ranging in age from 4 to 70. The Club currently has access to 15 hours of ice per week.  A large inventory of specialized rental speed skates has been assembled by the Club over the years for the use of its members.

The Club offers 4 diverse and affordable programs: Competitive, Recreational, Learn To Speed Skate, and an Adult Program with integrated Special Olympians being part of our programs. The Club’s home rink is at the River Oaks Recreational Centre on an Olympic size ice surface.

Our Club is run entirely by volunteers, from our Club Executives to Certified Coaches, who dedicate countless hours towards our members. We are also fortunate to have the support of our sponsors and the co-operation of the Town of Oakville.

Personal Bests are always the focus of the Club and not placements in any given race.  The Club is extra proud to have fostered several Provincial Champions, Ontario Record Holders, and Ontario Winter Games Record Holders.

We strongly encourage respect and appreciation for fellow skaters, coaches, executives, parents, and all Club members.   All of our members are equally important to the Club, from the beginner to the Provincial Champion.

ABOUT OUR SPEED SKATING PROGRAMS:

Learn To Speed Skate Program:

This is an introductory program offered by the Club to allow children an affordable opportunity to experience speed skating. This program emphasis is on the basics of speed skating. This program is offered for approximately 10-12 weeks in the Fall, (October to December) and Winter, (January to March – limited access only available in Winter Session). After completion of this introductory program, children routinely join either our Recreational or Competitive Programs and are given full credit for the amount originally paid. With this program, speed skate rental fees are included.

Recreational Program:

In this program, children continue learning the basics of speed skating with the emphasis on perfecting their technique. Some members in this program occasionally compete at fun local ability meets.

Competitive Program:

This program is offered by the Club for children who wish to fine tune their speed skating skills and take it to the next levels. There are 2 levels of our Competitive Program offered. The level a child is placed is based on many factors: age, size, and speed.

Children in this program not only compete at various meets, but are striving to reach the requirements and time standards to compete at Ontario Cups, Provincials, and beyond. Generally we have approximately 50 children in the Competitive Program.

Adult Program:

The Club offers this program so adults can also experience, learn, and enjoy the sport of speed skating. Many of the adults who skate in this program also chose to compete at meets in the Masters Divisions.

MEET OUR CLUB EXECUTIVE, COACHES, AND VOLUNTEERS:
