The Pioneer JV football team began their game against Dexter slowly, with both teams trading punts and unsuccessful 4th down conversions through much of the 1st quarter. Things changed when Andy Creal connected with Robert Bondy for a 16 yd TD strike as the quarter expired and Pioneer took a 6-0 lead after one quarter.
The defensive line led by Brady Butler (8 tackles) and Aaron Noffke (7 tackles) consistently pushed the Dexter team back on first down and controlled the game at the line of scrimmage. Anthony Soto, Justin Jones and Chris Rollin all contributed 5 tackles for the strong Pioneer defense that contained Dexter for most of the game.
Austin Sanders had another strong game (203 yds on 18 carries and 4 TDs) and scored the second Pioneer TD with 1:49 left in the first half and following the 2 pt conversion, Pioneer was ahead 14-0. Dexter responded with a quick strike 40-yd TD pass with 0:48 left in the half to pull within 7 points at the half.
Dexter started the second half strong with a scoring drive resulting in a 1 yd TD run to knot the score at 14 with 8:58 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Following a 3rd down 25 yd completion from Creal to Sam Harshberger, Sanders scored on a 19 yd run with 2:59 left in the 3rd and Pioneer never looked back. Sanders added a 55 yd TD run with 54 seconds left and the 3rd quarter ended with Pioneer ahead 28-14.
Pioneer extended their lead to 34-14 with Creal’s 9 yd TD run on 4th and goal with 9:00 left in the 4th quarter. Dexter responded with their own 15 yd TD run to bring the score to 34-21 with 6:59 remaining in the game. The end of the game was filled with scoring by both teams with Sanders running for a 32 yd TD, followed by a 90 yd TD run by the Dexter QB. Creal (22 for 33 for 267 yds and 2 TDs) connected with Josh Bush for a 33 yd TD pass to close out the Pioneer scoring. Dexter added a final TD with 0:04 remaining in the game. The final score was Pioneer 48 – Dexter 35.
Pioneer’s offensive leaders in receiving were Robert Bondy (5 receptions for 88 yds), Sam Harshberger (8 receptions for 83 yds), Austin Sanders (5 receptions for 43 yds). Aaron Noffke, Torrey Juide and Chris Rollin also had receptions. Torrey Juide also added 10 rushes for 46 yds and Andy Creal rushed 10 times for 65 yds.
Defensively Pioneer also received strong contributions from Bryan Griffin, Dylan Swanson, Javon Williams and Robert Bondy, all with 4 tackles each.
