Pioneer Beats Beford 48-13 10/1/2009Ann Arbor Pioneer’s high powered spread offense jumped on Bedford early in the Pioneer’s first home game this season with Austin Sanders scoring on a 2 yd run at 10:28 in the 1st quarter, capping a drive that featured a 45 yd run by Quarterback Andy Creal. The Pioneers defense led by Justin Jones (13 tackles) and Frank Diaz (12 tackles) came out aggressive and forced a 3 and out series for Bedford’s offense. At the 7:04 mark of the first quarter, Creal hit Bryan Griffin on a pass that Griffin took the distance for an 81 yd TD reception and Pioneer led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The “trickeration” of the Coach Finnerty spread offense kicked in when Creal passed to Jason Matney, who then threw deep to Robert Bondy for a 62 yd TD double pass play to move Pioneer to 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Bedford responded with an efficient drive culminating in a 27 yd TD run to close the gap to 21-7 at 4:39 in the 1st quarter. Pioneer responded with a drive that featured the “minnow” play, with Torrey Juide scampering 35 yds on a misdirection run, setting up another Sanders TD from 1 yard out. The Pioneer defense never let Bedford in the game by combining hard hitting by Jones, Brady Butler, Dallas Curtis with a fumble recovery by Ahmed Altairy and a pass break up by Chris Rollin. Following a strong 30 yd run by Sanders, Creal (9 for 12 for 199 yds and 2 TDs) connected with Sam Harshberger (3 receptions for 74 yds and 1 TD) on a 36 yd TD pass to put the Pioneers up by a score of 34-7 at halftime.
The second half, Pioneer put the game out of reach for good with an 18 yd TD run by Sanders, who finished with 139 yds on 16 carries, and a 40 yd TD run by Torrey Juide (95 yds on 6 carries) to move ahead 48-7. Bedford responded with a 9 yd TD run at 3:11 of the 3rd quarter to make the score 48-13. There was no scoring in the 4th quarter and the game finished 48-13. Dylan Swanson (7 tackles), Ivy Gregory (6 tackles) and Brady Butler (5 tackles) all played strong for the Pioneer defense. Dyon Lyons (65 yds on 8 carries) and David Foster led the Pioneer offense in the 4th quarter and the Pioneers improved their record to 5-0.  |
