In the traditional cross-town rivalry game against Ann Arbor Huron, the Pioneer JV team again started fast and never let up in a 48-13 rout of the River Rats. In a steady first half rain, the Pioneer offense struck quickly in a drive that included a 42 yd pass from QB Andy Creal to WR Bryan Griffin, which set up a 3 yd TD run by Austin Sanders at the 10:37 mark of the first quarter. Huron responded with a long drive highlighted by several long runs, which culminated in a 10 yd TD run to tie the score at 7 with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Austin Sanders quickly responded with a 59 yd TD run on the first play of the ensuing drive and Pioneer pulled ahead to stay 14-7. Following a 3 and out drive by Huron, Pioneer again struck quickly with a drive that ended with a 2 yd run by Sanders, who ended the day with 103 rushing yards on 13 carries and 6 TDs. Huron bounced back with a long run setting up a 1 yd TD with 0:12 left in the first quarter. Sanders replied with a 90 yd TD kickoff return to cap a furious paced last 2 minutes of the quarter. The first quarter ended with Pioneer leading 26-13.
The 2nd quarter was much calmer with each team exchanging punts and a pass interception by Cedric Johnson Jr. Pioneer got moving again when Dallas Curtis recovered a Huron fumble which was forced by a hit by Justin Jones with 5:35 left in the half. Following a 51 yd pass from Creal (6 for 11 for 149 yds and 1 TD) to Sam Harshberger, Pioneer scored again on a 7 yd TD run by Sanders. The 2 point conversion pass was successful as Robert Bondy pulled in the pass from Creal. Pioneer went into halftime leading 34-13.
The second half started well for the Pioneer defense when they forced a fumble by Huron which was recovered by Jay Lipinski. The defense dominated Huron in the second half, led by Brady Butler’s 10 tackles, Justin Jones, Dallas Curtis and Dyon Lyons each with 9 tackles and Josh Bush with 6 tackles. The quick strike Pioneer offense hit Huron hard when Creal completed a 38 yd TD pass to Bryan Griffin resulting in a 41-13 Pioneer lead with 11:35 left in the 3rd quarter. Torrey Juide had a great second half running up 59 yds on 7 carries, while Creal contributed 59 rushing yds on 7 carries for the game. Dylan Swanson blocked a Huron punt setting up Pioneer deep in Huron territory. The scoring ended with Sanders again crossing the goal line on a 5 yd run with 10:02 left in the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter was evenly played as the Pioneer offense was led by David Foster at QB and Torrey Juide at RB. The Pioneer defense also received strong contributions from Dylan Swanson, Anthony Soto, Ian Moore, Billy Durand and Ahmed Altairy all with 5 tackles each.
Next up for Pioneer is a tough SEC matchup against Chelsea.
