TEAM SELECTION 1/29/2007
To All Sachem Parents, Players, Coaches and Assistant Coaches:
This letter is in response to the posting in the Guest book. Someone who claims that he is speaking for others felt the tryouts Sachem held in September weren’t “tryouts”, because there were no cuts. This is true. Maybe they should be called evaluations.
The Board has always felt this league is for the kids and their best interest. Since the turnout was able to field two teams (Freshman), one having 10 and one having 9, we decided to have two teams with less players. As you are aware or maybe you’re not, the roller hockey participation has diminished over the years in the high school league. In an effort to promote the sport and not discourage players, we (coaches were included) decided to let everyone play. We attempted with the coaches’ picking their players to make the teams even based on the evaluation at tryouts. As it stands now, one team is in 4th and the other in 6th. There are 9 teams in the Freshmen division. There’s still about ½ the season left. We could have made one team with 12 –14 players and cut 5 to 7 players. This would reduce the playing time for each player because there would be more lines. It’s not only about having a powerhouse team but developing players to be able to play at the JV and Varsity level.
We would be happy to discuss this matter at a parent/coaches meeting if necessary. There are many Freshmen players (9th grade now), which will have to move to JV next year, which may change the dynamics of the Freshmen evaluation. We are not sure if the person who left the message in the guest book is a parent of a player, since we do not have any player with that same last name.
We addressed this issue to the Freshmen level since this is where the concern was indicated. Please consider this an open invitation to discuss this with the Board, by emailing or calling us to discuss further.
