Five high school coaches in Oregon have been honored as national coach of the year for their respective sports.
The National Federation of State High School Associations recognized three coaches in Oregon: South Salem softball coach Scott McCormick, who has 446 wins (including a 1991 state championship) in 26 years; Jesuit boys and girls cross country coach Tom Rothenberger, whose teams have won 11 state titles in his 25 years; and Oregon City boys basketball coach Mike Doherty, who in 45 years has 759 wins -- most in state history -- including three state championships.
Sweet Home football coach Rob Younger will receive the American Football Coaches Association Power of Influence Award for 2007. The national award is given to a high school football coach based on the power of positive influence he has demonstrated to his players, coaches, school and community. Younger will receive the award Jan. 9, 2008.
As previously reported, Jesuit's Dave Nicholas was honored by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as its boys soccer coach of the year. Nicholas has coached for 29 years and has compiled 394 wins, including 10 state championships and one co-championship.
