Oregon University head softball coach Pam Knox announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent Thursday, Nov. 13.
Kelsey White, Brittany Reeves and Andrea Bailey will all be joining the Wolves' softball team as freshmen next season as part of Knox's 2009 recruiting class.
White, a pitcher from South Salem High School, went 18-5 with a 0.47 earned run average as a high school junior. She recorded 188 strikeouts on the season to earn as all-conference and all-region selection in addition to being named as an all-state honorable mention. She has also garnered two all-academic awards in her high school career.
Knox's quote: "She is one of the top pitchers in the Salem area," said Knox. "She pitches with great movement and will be a nice addition to our pitching staff. Western Oregon was a perfect fit for her academically and athletically."
Reeves, a pitcher from Crater High School in Central Point, Ore., was a 2008 5A first team all-conference and all-state selection. She had a 0.85 ERA on the mound and a .296 batting average at the plate. She has also been honored for having a GPA of 3.75 or higher for the past three years.
Knox's quote: "She is a very good pitcher that uses her excellent velocity very well," continued Knox. "She has the potential to be very good pitcher and hitter for us. We were fortunate that Reeves wanted to be a pre-optometry major and that Western Oregon is able to her that educational opportunity."
Bailey, a shortstop from Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, Ore., was a first team all-conference and second-team all-state selection as a junior. She helped lead the Bruins to a conference championship as she batted .360, with a .474 on-base percentage, 11 doubles and a .490 slugging percentage in 30 games. She did not commit an error in 198 innings last season as she received the coaches' golden glove award for the second consecutive season.
Knox's quote: "Andrea Bailey is a very talented shortstop with great range and a cannon for an arm," explained Knox. "She doesn't make errors and is steady with the glove. At the plate, she puts the bat on the ball consistently."
The signing period for NLI begins today, Nov. 12, and runs through Tuesday Nov. 18.
"All three student-athletes have the ability to come in and start for us," said Knox. "They are going to provide our returning players with a challenge, especially the pitching staff. Bailey, Reeves and White are all impact players from the state of Oregon which will contribute to the future success of our program."
The Western Oregon softball team will open its season with a doubleheader against Montana State Saturday Feb. 21, with the first game scheduled for noon.
