1/20/2009

South Salem High School junior Alexa Peterson has verbally committed to play softball at the University of Oregon.

Peterson, a catcher, is a two-time first-team all-Central Valley Conference selection. She was a second-team Class 6A all-state pick as a freshman and honorable mention all stater as a sophomore.

"I really wanted to try to stay on the west coast," Peterson said. "I was looking for a Pac-10. I was being looked at by OSU and U of O and I just really thought it would be cool to stay in state.

"I took my option U of O, being a Duck fan my whole life."

As the Saxons' leadoff hitter, she has hit .400 and .402 in her first two years of high school with .613 and .500 slugging percentages.

She has seven doubles, four triples, three home runs, 26 RBIs and has caught 19 of 23 runners attempting to steal.

Peterson also is a three-year starter in basketball for the Saxons and averages 12.2 points per game.
