It took 27 years for Scott McCormick to get to 499 wins, but it took one day to get No. 500.

The South Salem High School softball team held off West Salem for an 11-2 win on the road Tuesday afternoon to give McCormick his 500th win as a head coach, a day after earning No. 499.

“You got to be blessed with good kids, you’ve got to have good teams ... For a long time,” said McCormick, in his 14th year as the Saxons’ head coach. “You go years of winning 10 games, it takes a lot longer than when you’re winning 20.

“That just really reflects on the quality of kids that we have. They’re committed, they put the time in, they want to play. That’s pretty cool.”

The Saxons scored six runs in the sixth inning to blow open the game.

“It was nice to get it done this year because you never know next year what’s going to happen with the schedule and everything,” said McCormick, who coached at McNary for 13 years.

“This was a good group to do it with because it’s a group that works hard and is fun to be around. They’re kids that are committed.”
