STRONG ISLAND SOUND TRYOUTS A SUCCESS 9/7/2006Patchogue, NY, September 8, 2006 — Under the direction of first-year head coach, Dytanya Mixson, more than 20 players competed for the right to wear the Sound uniform during the 2006-2007 season.
During tryouts, candidates were broken up into two teams to participate in a 50-minute scrimmage. Coach Mixson watched closely from the sidelines as two of his assistant coaches were responsible for leading the individual squads. After the first scrimmage, several players switched teams and another 50-minute exhibition game was played. The focus of the initial workouts was to provide the coaching staff with a glimpse at the individual skills each player brings to the court and how those skills translate in the team concept.
“After the team’s highly successful first season, we know we’ll be the hunted this year and having the right mix of players who thrive under such pressure is critical,” Coach Mixson stated. “I was pleased by the effort of those players who participated in our preliminary tryouts. Ultimately, we’re looking for players who work well together on the offensive and defensive end of the floor.”
A second round of tryouts will be held September 23rd and 24th from 10am to 1pm at the Island Garden. The team encourages interested players to pre-register online at www.strongislandsound.com. An early registration fee of $100 guarantees a spot at the tryout camp; on-site registration is $125 and is limited on a space-available basis. Credit cards and personal checks will not be accepted.
