After going 4-1 in limited action as a freshman, Walz took on a larger role for Kansas last season. Walz, a right-handed pitcher from Omaha, Neb., went 8-3 in 14 starts with a 4.70 ERA, while racking up a team high 88 strikeouts. He was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, and also received Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors in April.
Over the summer, Walz pitched for the U.S. Collegiate National team and impressed with a 2-0 record with 22 strikeouts and a 2.89 ERA in 18 2/3 innings.
Kansas junior T.J. Walz has been named Preseason All-Big 12 selections by Rivals.com.
Walz, a 6-foot right-handed pitcher from Omaha, Neb., posted a team-best eight wins last season. He was also selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2009, with a 6-1 record and a 3.74 ERA in conference games. Walz led the team in strikeouts (88) last season, including a 12-K performance against No. 11 Kansas State in his last start of the regular season. Of his eight overall victories, five came against ranked opponents including a 3-2 win over No. 4 Arizona State and a complete game shutout against No. 9 Baylor. Walz completed his 2009 campaign by pitching for the U.S. National Team during its summer tour. |
