The Cyclone defense posted their 7th shutout of the season Saturday night Cyclones weather storm, win 21-0 to advance to GMFL Championship game 9/14/2009
Mehlville, MO~ The Cyclones overcame 5 turnovers to beat the Arkansas Wildcats for the third time this season (21-0). Now the Cyclones advance to the GMFL Championship game against the Illinois Firehawks on September 12th in Chenoa, Illinois.
All three touchdowns came on the ground as Alex Thomas, operating out of the "Wildcat" offense, had two spectacular touchdown runs of 65 and 46 yards. Damion Mitchell punched in a 1 yd touchdown run setup by a 34 yd interception return by Chris Nelson. The Cyclones also had a 51 yard touchdown pass to Jason Boyd called back for an illegal block.
Defensively, Evan Brinker had 11 tackles, and William Royston had 4 tackles and an interception. The defense also totaled 5 sacks on the night, led by Laroy Lewis and Will West with 1 & 1/2 sacks a piece.
"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it" said Head Coach Troy Robertson. "We were unable to get in rhythm on offense tonight." A lot of the Cyclones' problems were created by Wildcats middle linebacker Josh James, who was able to get consistent pressure on the Cyclones O-line all night, and slowing down their running backs. They couldn't however contain the speed of Alex Thomas who outran the entire Wildcat defense for scores not once, but twice in the first half. "He is probably our fastest athlete" Said Coach Robertson. Thomas is exciting to watch. He has now accounted for 877 total yards of offense and 12 touchdowns, and is only the second Cyclone player ever to pass, run, and receive a touchdown in a single season. The other was Dave MaCormack back in 2004.
