by: James GallagherTBFFL held its Cinco de Mayo tournament this last Saturday and Team Flagplayer, representing Tampa 4on4, once again emerged victorious. Despite the low number of teams involved, there were some well played, exciting games and everyone had a great time. The teams participating were Deep Threat, 1st & Goal, Dog Pound, Trojans, Flagplayer and Bomb Squad. Flagplayer, behind a 35+ point per game blitzkrieg and stellar defensive play had no trouble making it to the championship game. In a double elimination format Bomb Squad, led by GCP’s Jimmy Strong, fought its way back from an early loss to Flagplayer to seek redemption in the finals. It wasn’t to be, however, as Flagplayer dominated 47-27.
Relentless rushing by Earl Kulp led to several turnovers and scores throughout the tournament, including a rare block/interception/score combination to seal the semifinal win against the upset-minded Trojans. Hector Vega led the team in interceptions with 5, with 3 of them going for scores. Bert Rich, second in INTs, claims that this was only because teams simply refuse to throw to his side.
Offensively, the team wasn’t to be denied as Glenn Harshbarger and Jason Rice continue to show why they are two of the best players in Tampa. Quarterback James Gallagher played well also, throwing an average of over 4 touchdowns per game and doing a good job of creating opportunities for the offense.
TBFFL, headed by Mike Lankford, has shown that it can put together a nice tournament and we all look forward to the next one. For more information about upcoming leagues and tournaments, visit www.TBFFL.org
