Thunder strikes to Start the Season

The Tampa Thunder traveled to the Atlanta, Georgia area on October 3rd to take part in the first ever Southeastern Power Soccer League tournament. The Thunder were more than excited for the start the 2009-2010 season and to show off their skills to the competition. This would be the first game of rookie Aaron Masterson’s power soccer career.   For this tournament however, the Thunder were without perhaps one of their best players, goalkeeper/forward Ryan Coton. The Thunder needed everyone to step up their game and give 110 percent.

In the first game of the day, the Thunder took on the Division 2 Chattanooga Speeders, however the Thunder proved to be too much for the Speeders, as the Thunder took an early lead and never looked back. The Tampa offense was relentless throughout the game, as they scored 8 goals on the Speeders. As time expired, the Thunder had won the match 8-0.

Later in that day, the Tampa Thunder faced their rivals the Atlanta Synergy, who placed second in the 2009 National Tournament. Early in the first half, the Synergy proved to be too much for the Thunder as they scored two quick goals and jumped ahead 2-0. However, in the second half of the game the tough Thunder defense shut down the Synergy’s potent offensive attack.  The Thunder had a few opportunities to score on Synergy, but they were unable to score any goals and Synergy won the game 2-0.

In the third and final game of the day, the Thunder took on the always tough Atlanta Tigers. The Thunder started the game strong, and had many scoring opportunities throughout the entire game. In addition, the Thunder defense shut down the Tigers offensive attack completely. Despite all the scoring chances the Thunder were unable to score any goals, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Thunder will use this game time experience as they train and prepare for the next Southeastern League competition is in January of next year.

WHAT TIME IS IT??  IT'S THUNDER TIME!!

Welcome to the 2009-10 season of your Tampa THUNDER!  We are so excited to be starting our 6th year as the premier Power Wheelchair Soccer Team in Florida.

Some changes this year include the addition of rookie Aaron Masterson to our roster - welcome to the Thunder Zone, Aaron!

We have recently joined the Southeastern Power Soccer League which gives us the opportunity to travel across the Southeastern United States playing in competitive tournaments against some of the top teams in the country.  We will be hosting a League Day on April 10, 2010 at the Safety Harbor Community Center - we hope all our fans will join us for a tremendous day of Power Soccer.

This summer, the USPSA accepted applications for the 2011 TeamUSA that will play in the World Cup of Power Soccer.  Three members of The Tampa Thunder - Ben Carpenter, Danny Gorman and Ryan Coton were chosen to compete for a coveted spot.  They will attend TryOut Camp in Fishers, Indiana in November, 2009.  We know you will all join us in congratulating them for the opportunity they have and wish them the best during tryouts.

We continue to seek sponsors for our team.  Please contact us if you or your company are interested in partnering in any way (big or small) with us.  Keep an eye out for some upcoming fundraising events including the wildly popular Walk n' Roll aTHON.

We are looking forward to an exciting season and hope to see you in June at Nationals!

Three Thunder Members Make It To Team USA Tryouts

Written by Ben Carpenter

Two years ago, the inaugural Power Soccer World Cup was held in Tokyo, Japan.  One Thunder member, Danny Gorman made the team.  The US team made it to the championship game, and the player who scored the winning penalty kick in double overtime was none other than Danny Gorman.  In 2011 the second Power Soccer World Cup will be held.  Tryouts for the team will be during November.  Three Tampa Thunder members, Danny Gorman, Ryan Coton, and Ben Carpenter sent in applications and have been picked to try out for Team USA.  They have already begun receiving their practice drills to help them prepare for tryouts and they are more ready than ever, but these three Thunder Members need your moral support to help them achieve their goal of making the team and going to the 2011 Power Soccer World Cup.
