Academy Wins Big At Radford...

9/15/09

The Virginia Tech Academy team traveled to Radford this past Saturday to face a combined Radford A-B-C side. The game started slow for both teams, but the scoring opened mid-way through the first half with a weak side pick from a scrum by junior scrumhalf Eddie Feldman, followed by a strong run by flanker Evan Horetsky, and a quick tap penalty taken advantage of by freshman flyhalf Andrew Gray. Strong tackling, good pursuit, and fantastic set pieces shut down many Radford chances in the first half.

The second half was characterized by extremely strong pack play from the Academy, resulting in five more tries, including two from sophomore hooker Bill Whalen, one from Tom Bannister after a Nick Funk offload on an open weak side of the pitch, and one more from a quick tap penalty from Gray.

The final try of the match was awarded to Andy Edwardes through excellent support after a break away run by Bill Whalen. Kicking from Paul Caron and Chris Rorrer finished the score at 48-7.
