Virginia Tech Rrugby starts preparing to get back on the field

The Virginia Tech program is on the way back from its suspension by announcing the appointment of a new coaching staff.

North Carolina college All-Star coach and ARN columnist Andy Richards has been named Virginia Tech’s director of rugby.

Jon Conrad, who has been head coach for the past few seasons, will remain in that position should he decide to return to Virginia Tech next fall, if not, then Richards will fill the role for at least one year before looking for a new head coach to join the program in Blacksburg.

“We will be looking to re-build our relationship with the school and will be looking to build a better rapport with our alumni,” says Richards.

Perry Pence will become the ‘B’ side coach and will be heading up an aggressive recruiting drive. Jimmy Ivory and Mark Seiss will be helping out as much as their commitments allow.

The Virginia Tech University banned the program for one year early in the fall over a hazing incident involving members of the newly formed rugby Academy.

“Jon Conrad has done a fantastic job over the past few years and has consistently had over 75 players involved on a regular basis,” continues Richards.

“Although the suspension of the program was a blow, this is now the right time to take stock and plan for the long-term future. My wife is now a member of faculty, we've just bought a house in Blacksburg; I'm in this for the long-haul.

“There is so much potential for rugby at Virginia Tech; the program has a great history on the national stage.
