R.E. LEE Standout to Play for Wytheville CC

STAUNTON — Chandis Goff will play baseball next year for the Wytheville Community College Wildcats.

The Robert E. Lee right-hander has received a financial aid package from the school, and will help bolster a thin mound staff. When not pitching, Goff probably will be at shortstop.

Wytheville Community College plays in the Virginia Community College Conference, and 2009 was its first full year for baseball.

The school has made an oral commitment to join the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 2010-11, and will play in Region X.

Goff, who currently has a 4-2 record and 2.6 earned run average for the Leemen, was recruited by the Wildcats.

"They came to several of my games," the Lee senior said. "And they invited me for a campus visit.

"They just had a shortstop leave, and they want me in their pitching rotation. They want me to be a starter."

Eventually Goff would like to transfer to a Division I school. He plans to major in business.

Goff relies on a fastball, mixing it with a changeup and curve.

"Some say my curve makes hitters look bad," he said. "It locks them up."

Goff, who also wrestled for the Leemen, has seen benefits from that sport carry over to baseball.

"Wresting has made me a lot stronger," he said. "It's made my fastball a lot stronger. I was in the mid 70s last year and now throw in the low to mid 80s. My goal is to reach 90 mph."

Besides Wytheville, Goff received looks from Liberty University, Eastern Mennonite, and Patrick Henry Community College.

"It's a great opportunity for Chandis," said Lee coach Bobby Humphrey. "I think he will fit in well. It should be a perfect situation for him."
