Dave Brust’s Webster Yankees dropped an unconventional doubleheader, and with that went the 2009 season.
Webster needed at least one win on the final day of the regular season as the Hornell Dodgers and Elmira Pioneers visited Basket Road Field to complete a pair of suspended games.
Hornell scored seven unanswered runs to overcome a three-run deficit in the opener to down the pinstripes 8-4.
The Yankees took a 4-1 lead in the first inning on July 25th when storms came through and halted the game. Matt Jacobs (UMass-Lowell) capped the first frame with a two-double to left field plating Nate Koontz (Ball State) and Steve Muoio (Georgia C&S). Koontz and Muoio combined for back-to-back RBI base knocks scoring Ricky Clark (Central Michigan) and Rhett Goodmiller (Central Michigan).
Any momentum gained from the rally drowned in a summer storm.
Paul Olson (Miss Valley St.) and Adalberto Vargas (Alfred St.) crossed the dish in the second to cut the Yankee lead to one. Hornell tied the score in the fourth when Trey Bennett (Mercyhurst) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Adam Schlessel (Mercyhurst) blew the game open in the sixth with a bases-clearing double, and Hornell was on their way. Rich Brown (LeMoyne), Jeff Lockwood (Tennessee), and Bennett all scored as Hornell took a commanding 8-4 lead.
In the night cap, the Elmira Pioneers came to Basket Road to complete a game that was halted in the third stanza. Elmira started with the day with a 2-1 lead and never looked back.
The Pioneers pasted three runs on the board in the fourth and held on for the win. Kevin Cressman (Mansfield) and Sean Jamieson (Canisus) both tripled and scored to lead the Pioneer rally. JJ Edwards added an RBI single for the Pios.
Webster closed the gap with runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh. Koontz slashed a two-out single to center field bringing home Goodmiller in the fifth. Ryan Chenoweth (Ball State) walked to lead the sixth. With the hit and run on, Chriss Soldi (UMass-Lowell) drilled a base rap and Chenoweth scooted to third. Chenoweth eventually came home on a walk. Koontz led the seventh with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacobs.
"We had a great group of guys who worked hard," said Brust. "They deserved to make the playoffs."
Webster finished the campaign 21-21. The pinstripes finished in fifth place of the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s West Division.
