The Rochester Royals are now the Webster Yankees
On June 9th 2006, a group of local investors pooled funds to create a new team in Rochester competing in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). The New York Collegiate Baseball League, founded in 1978, is a summer wood bat league, sanctioned by the NCAA and partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league gives players who have not yet signed a professional contract the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by scouts.
The Royals roster included players from across America. The team is comprised of players from Marist University, Delaware University, Miami of Ohio, Binghamton University, Towson University, Eckerd College, and Cal Poly Pomona. Local standouts from both R.I.T. and Monroe Community college have also joined the team to help round out this talented roster.
MCC Assistant Coach Mike Kelly was given the opportunity to lead this highly competitive team as Head Coach. He will be working closely with Dave Brust as Assistant Coach.
The Rochester Royals had a very successful 2006 season. The season ended 23-20 and earned a play off birth. The Royals lead the NYCBL in batting average and were 4th in Team ERA.
Three Royals were named to the 2006 NYCBL All Star Team. Two Royals are projected to be included in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.
In November 2006, thanks to support from NYS Senator Mike Nozzolio, the Rochester Royals elected to move the franchise to Webster N.Y., and become the Webster Yankees. Webster has been selected by Sports Illustrated as one of the top sports towns in the U.S.
The Yankees look forward to beginning their 2007 season in Webster, in a new lighted facility with the same dimensions as The Yankee stadium in the Bronx. This new state of the art stadium will be enjoyed by everyone in the community.
