2008 OLYMPICS BASEBALL Canada Ends Olympics with Extra-Inning Loss to Taipei
There would be no story book ending for the Canadian Olympic Team, despite their best efforts. Canada came back to force extra-innings, but they could not hold off Chinese Taipei as the Canadians would suffer yet another one-run loss in their final preliminary game at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games by a score of 6-5 in 12 innings. 2008 All-Canadian College First Team
First base: Mitch Delaney (freshman, LaSalle, Ont.) Western Texas Westerners (New York Yankees) A 21st round pick by the Chicago White Sox IN 2007, the Villanova High School grad opted to play junior college ball and moved up nine spots leading Western Texas college in hitting (.380), home runs (13) and RBIs (45). Delaney provided power from a power position on our all-Canadian team. Delaney tied for third with most homers by Canadians -- Delaney , who played for Windsor Selects and Team Ontario, was seventh in NJCCA Div. I in home runs per game (.245). He was also 28th in slugging percentage (.673), 30th in total bases per Game (2.170), 42nd in batting average (.380) and 43rd in hits per game (1.226).
Second base : Kevin Mailloux (junior, Windsor, Ont.) Canisius Golden Griffins Mailloux earned Third-Team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and all-MAAC First-Team honors. He broke single-season program records with 77 hits, 56 runs scored, 53 RBIs and 129 total bases. Mailloux also led the team with a .377 batting average and had 14 doubles, 12 home runs, a .632 slugging percentage and a .429 on-base percentage. Maillioux tied for third most homers amongst Canadians with Mitch Delaney (freshman, LaSalle, Ont.) of the Western Texas, Mailloux earned First Team All-Canadian honours in 2006 and placed on the Second Team in 2005.
OF : Ryan LaPensee (sophomore, Windsor, Ont.) Wayne State Warriors LaPensee was named a Player to Watch by the American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America Committee and named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team as well as the All-Academic Team. He started 50 of 51 games, leading the team and finished fourth in the GLIAC with a .409 average. LaPensee became one of four WSU players ever to hit .400 or better twice and the first since 1993-94. He finished sixth in the conference in on base percentage (.480) and hits (70) and seventh in runs batted in (45). LaPensee was held hitless in just five games from April 1 to the end of the season. He batted .594 (19-32) in the postseason including a .667 clip (14-21) at the NCAA Regional and was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. LaPensee played for the Windsor Selects.

LITTLE LEADS WSU A trio of area players helped Wayne State University's baseball team take three of four games from West Georgia University to open the season. Windsor left-hander Dane Little, who is a Brennan grad, got the win in the opener, allowing just two earned runs in 52/3 innings of work.
LaSalle's Ryan LaPensee, who is a Villanova grad, and Tecumseh's Paul LaMantia, who is a St. Anne grad, both started the season hot at the plate. LaMantia, who needed a single in the final to hit for the cycle, is leading Wayne State with a .545 average while LaPensee is second at .400. The two share the club lead for home runs (one) and RBIs (five).

Tecumseh's Chris Cullen has survived final cuts and been assigned to an A level team in the minor league chain of the Pittsburgh Pirates.The 22-year-old pitcher will play for the West Virginia Power in the Southern Atlantic League. A Michigan State grad, Cullen spent last season with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats of the Independent League. He started 10 games for the Cracker-Cats, going 5-1 with a 3.20 earned run average.His strong showing out west prompted a mid-winter invite to spring training from the Pirates.

Kevin Mailloux A St. Anne grad, has been honoured by Buffalo's Canisius College as the school's male athlete of the year for 2009. A second baseman for the Golden Griffins, Mailloux received his award at the annual banquet. Rated among the top 70 Canadians eligible for the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, Mailloux led the Griffins with 58 hits through 43 games. He set a school record in 2008 with 77 hits. The six-foot 200-pound infielder leads the team with 14 doubles, 16 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games. He has the team's second best batting average at .360 and is third in RBIs with 37. He also had a 20-game hitting streak, the longest at the school since 1994. Mailloux arrived at Buffalo following two seasons at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Mich. SIMONE HONOURED University of West Alabama left-fielder Brian Simone of Amherstburg was named to the NCAA Division II second-team all-star conference Thursday. Playing in the Gulf South Conference, the Villanova graduate had a .327 average with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 25 games played with the Tigers this season. LAPENSEE PRAISED Wayne State's Ryan LaPensee of LaSalle was named to the Rawlings/ ABCA All-Midwest Region Second Team Tuesday. LaPensee, who was also selected to the All-GLIAC first team as an outfielder, batted .362, fourth-best on the team and 14th best in the GLIAC, with 30 RBIs and a team-high 47 runs scored. The Villanova grad tied for the league lead with 26 stolen bases and tied for the team lead with 20 multiple-hit games. WINDSOR SELECTS PRESIDENT
BERNIE SOULLIERE TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE CANADIAN BASEBALL HALL OF FAME

Larry Walker, Ernie Whitt and Bernie Soulliere, who represent three unique stories leading to three unique roles as they will help lead Team Canada in the upcoming World Baseball Classic in Toronto this March, will reunite in St. Mary’s, Ontario on June 20th when all three will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Soulliere was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame with Ernie Whitt and Larry Walker this year.
Whitt, who managed Team Canada for both the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic as well as the 2004 Olympics and the 1999 Pan-Am Games, will be back as manager.
Walker, Ca-nada's all-time Major League Baseball hits leader, will be joined by pitching coach Denis Boucher, third base coach Tim Leiper and coach/director of national teams for Baseball Canada Greg Hamilton. The team will play a four-game exhibition series against the U.S. Thursday-Sunday before departing for Stockholm to compete in first-round pool play.
Team Canada competes against Korea, Netherlands Antilles and host Sweden in Pool C action Sept. 9-12.
The top two teams in each pool plus the top four third-place finishers will advance to the second round of the tournament in the Netherlands and Italy starting Sept. 13.
