Dugout Chatter, Edition Two

Dugout Chatter 2nd Edition Watertown Rams

Back with the second edition of Dugout Chatter, we will introduce a new portion of the team update, the “Ram of the Week.”  Be sure to add us on facebook as well as twitter so you can follow other up to the date player signings and team news.

Youth is Served-  Among the candidates and favorites for player of the week has to be Jacob Boylan (Kansas).  Boylan is off to a sizzling start, hitting .520 (13-25) as Kansas is off to a 4-3 start.  He leads the team in doubles, triples, hits, and is second behind fellow Ram and Jayhawk teammate Justin Protacio in on base percentage.  The sweet swinging freshman has been a pleasant surprise to start, although, the Jayhawks certainly recruited him for his offensive ability and although they don’t believe he will hit over .500 on the season (WOW) it is expected of the rookie to be a major contributor.  Austin Lueck (South Florida) and teammate Nik Alfonso also are on the hit parade to begin the season.  Lueck hit his first homerun as a Bull, a two run shot against Florida State on Saturday.  Alfonso has also been hot at the plate and going into the games on Sunday was 7-11 to start the season!  These three freshman are off to great starts for Kansas and South Florida.  JJ Wagner (Pacific) was 2-5 with a double and three runs scored in a Pacific 9-3 victory over Gonzaga and the bump into the 2 slot in the batting order seemed to jump start the 1st year Tiger.

Speaking of Kansas…Justin Protacio was mentioned above as leading the Jayhawks in on base percentage but that isn’t all the Kansas sophomore is up to.  His 6 RBI’s currently place him second, his 6 walks lead the team as well as his perfect 3-3 in stolen bases.  This all adds up to a .609 on base clip, the previously mentioned team leader in that category.  Protacio will also be in the running for Ram of the week.

On the Bump-  Bryson Kauhaahaa (Cypress CC) has been dominant in his three starts this spring.  Cypress is 9-3 and Kauhaahaa is 2-0 himself with a team leading 25 innings pitched and a 1.80 ERA also a team best.  He has struck out 17 against only 5 walks.  Thomas Casey (UT Corpus Christi), Dan Reitzler (San Diego), Ryan Dominique (LSU Eunice) and Joe Adel (South Florida) were all flawless in their outings over the weekend.  Jake Jenkins (Pacific) also got his first college start and didn’t receive a decision in a loss against UNLV.

Wait, I had a good week too!!- James Bonds (College of the Canyons, San Diego U.) is battling injuries and has been limited in action, but, is still 8-17 (.471) on the young season and all-league outfielder looks to continue his hot start with a fresh clean bill of health.  Brad Rush (St. John Fisher) was 1-3 with a double and an RBI as the Cardinals kicked off their season with a road victory at Suny Purchase.

And the Winner is…  In honor of the Oscar’s this week we kick off our weekly award winner.  Five players were up for nomination, Boylan, Protacio, Lueck, Alfonso and Kauhaahaa.  And, since there are no ties in baseball, the winner is Jacob Boylan of Kansas.  All players had great weeks and are off to great starts, but, Boylan’s numbers are just to good to pass up right now with that batting average over .500.

Team News-  Save the date..June 4th we will hold the first annual Watertown Ram/FX Caprara Golf Scramble. This will take place at the Rustic Golf and Country Club in Dexter NY.
