Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) section allows you to enter a title, keywords, & a description for your site that feed into SEO. SEO is what determines where your website appears when folks in your area search for your organization. Many factors can affect SEO.

What info should I enter?

Home Page Title: text in this field appears in the browser tabs when folks are on your website.

Keywords: list words that logically fit with your organization & reinforce your site's content.

Description: enter information about your organization in sentence form.

Show Site Sharing Links

click the checkbox if you'd like to display links to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and email. These links will allow Visitors to your site to share your website from their social media pages. For example, if a visitor clicks Facebook, a popup will appear that will allow them to share your website to their Facebook friends.

How does this info affect my SEO standing?

It is most important that the content of your Home page, Home Page Title, & description are all reinforcing the same keywords in a logical way.

Repeating a keyword 100 times will NOT help. The search engines will likely block your website altogether.

Here's an example for the Bismark Brewers.

Let's say you're working a website for a 55+ baseball team in Bismark, WY called the Bismark Brewers. You want this website to be first in searches for "Bismark Baseball" and "Bismark Brewers".

Home Page Title: Bismark Brewers Baseball - Senior Baseball League

Keywords: Bismark Brewers Baseball, Senior Baseball, baseball leagues in Bismark, Adult Baseball, Brewers Baseball ...etc.

Description: Official website of the Bismark Brewers Baseball Team, Part of the Bismark Baseball tradition for over 50 years. Bismark Brewers Seniors Baseball supports local charities through yearly events and sponsorships. We are proud of our community outreach projects in Bismark County including our association with the Bismark County Boys and Girls Clubs.

What if my team has a common name?

There can be lots of competition when it comes to some team or organization names. Using the Bismark Brewers as our example, if someone searches for "Brewers" or "Brewers Baseball", they're most likely going to see the Milwaukee Brewers website first.

Why?  Because many large and well-known website like Major League Baseball, ESPN, and news organizations also link to this specific baseball team's website. Also, big-name companies and organizations can pay big money to be the first return in search engines. Most local teams and organizations can't monetarily compete with hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But we've been the Brewers for years. Everyone in Bismark knows us.
That's okay! Emphasize what makes your organization unique.  If you're the Bismark Brewers, adding "Bismark" reinforces your unique website content. Your website can still be listed near the top of the returns if the guidelines listed are followed & info is entered correctly.

What can I do to be sure my site appears as high as possible in searches?

We index our active websites at the beginning of each month. If you've just created your website, it may not have been indexed yet, but there are a few things you can do to help boost your returns:

  • Make sure use the Keywords section to list words & phrases that people in your area would use when searching. For example "senior baseball in Bismark", "55+ baseball", "www.bismarkseniorbaseball.com", "mens baseball", "womens baseball", "coed baseball" would all work for the Bismark Brewers
  • Make sure your website does not have a Website Password. Go to Website > Design > Website Password. The first section should display a green lock. If it doesn't, click change & follow the prompts.
  • Check the content on your Home page. Make sure the Keywords & Home Page Title you've listed are included in Text modules. The search engines are only going to "look" at your Home page for matches to what a person has typed in their search.
  • Keep your website active with quality content that is updated regularly.
  • Contact respected local organizations like newspapers, news channels, & locally owned stores that might be interested in linking your website to theirs. Offer to reciprocate. Quality counts more than quantity: you want these websites with traffic that makes sense to your organization.
  • Do a search for "SEO" or "Search Engine Optimization" to get more tips and tricks.
