League Score Entry Rules FAQ

HTO has a number of tools to help the HQ and teams manage score entry. As a team enters scoring information the system will compare data and alert the users when necessary. Admins at the Main HQ can set up rules for how to manage various situations.

To understand how scoring rules work, the default settings are explained here. Once you understand the default settings, it will be easier to decide whether you wish to customize certain settings.

Disable Team Editing

By default, team-level admins have the ability to enter their own Scores.

Multi-Team HQ managers have the option to prevent teams from entering scores. If the teams cannot enter scores, no rules are needed because the Main HQ is controlling all input.

To disable teams from entering scores:

1. Go to Teams & Schedules > Schedules & Results and on the far right, click Options. Select Team Posting Rules.

2. Set restrictions and X out of the Options and click OK to refresh with your new settings.

Default Scoring Rules

1. After a game on your schedule has been played, either team can simply edit the game and enter data. Once either team enters data, the results will appear on the scoreboard on the visitor's site, and both teams will now see the scores entered on their admin Schedule & Results page.

- No notices are sent if there are no data conflicts (default setting)
- The data is automatically posted on the opponents site (default setting)

Note: Game Summary and Play-by-Play are unique to each team. They are not compared for conflicts.

2. Either team can edit a score that has been posted.

If they are adding NEW information which does not conflict with previous entries, they can Save, and the data will be auto-posted to both teams. (For example, one team could enter the final score, and later, another team could input the score for each inning or period.)

If either team decides they want to CHANGE previously entered data, certain alerts are triggered:

- A red question mark (?) with the numeric value from the opponents site will appear next to any score entry box with a conflict. (Note: it compares the data from the OPPONENTS site)
- An ALERT box appears below the scoreboard warning the team admin that there is a conflict. The team then has a choice:

Attempt to remove conflicting data: The team can still can manually edit and possibly resolve the conflicting entries. if "AUTO-UPDATE OPPONENTS SCORE is not the default, the team will also have a button to fill the scoreboard with the opponents scores. If they do not attempt to change these scores, there will not be any conflict.

2b. Place game in dispute: If the team admin believes that their data is correct even though there is a conflict alert, they can save the data anyway, but it will NOT be posted to the opponents site. There is a message box where they can explain the dispute, which will be emailed to the opponent's Website Administrator AND the HQ Administrator. The game is now "in dispute" and will trigger a "score not final" message on the website.

3. Since the opponent is notified with an email, they will know about the conflict and can edit the game.

3a. The most common situation where there was simply an error, and they can apply the other team score and resolve the conflict. If the conflict is resolved this way, a follow up email is sent to the other team's Website Administrator and the HQ Administrator, notifying them that the conflict is resolved.

3b. If they do not agree, they can also write a message and click "Send email only".

4. At this point, the HQ Administrator has override privileges, so they have the ability to end the dispute and stop further score entry if they wish to.

- Press the Info button for the game and check the box next to Scores to Lock Team Editing for that game only.

If the game is left in "dispute" the scoreboard will have a message saying "score not final". (Note: HQ site score defaults to home team, and team sites show their own score entries while in dispute.)

Football Team Stat Entry

Football users have stat entry fields on the Scores Edit Page (In the Admin Schedule) for the Team Cumulative Stats.

There are entry boxes for both the Home and Away team's information (football teams often use this data to know how good both the offense and defense are).

If both teams have Team totals entered, it will use the home teams data for Home stats, and away team data for Away stats.

- Sacks Allowed will update from the defensive team.

Teams will show conflicting opponents stats to the right in red similar to the scoreboard. There are also some stat categories that can be calculated by summing the player stat totals.  If these calculated values conflict with the entered value, it will be shown to the right of the entry box.

- These calculated value conflicts will have a = in front instead of a ?.  If both the opponents value and the calculated value differ from the entered value, both the = and ? will show with their values.

Team stats will not auto post to the other team when entered by a team. There are complications with proper validation of the information and we do not want to overwrite the opponents information without the proper warnings.

As with score and stat entry, when posts to the scoreboard are made on the main HQ website, it will post the same data to both teams.

- The game will not go into conflict if football team stats do not match between the two teams, and the conflict tab will not appear. Keep in mind that the conflicts are visible manually by users with the yellow highlighted stat entry box and the conflicting value shown to the right.

League/Multi-Team Site Tips
  • Once a game has been entered, a team can edit both their scores and the competing team's scores. Use the Team Posting Rules settings in the Options tab on the far right of the Schedule & Results page to adjust these settings.
  • As the League Administrator, you have the right to disable the editing of Games, Scores, Stats, or the Roster on any or all team sites. We can also set these features to be disabled after a certain time. Let us know if you need anything disabled. You can disable this yourself game by game by disabling team editing when adding the game. You can also edit the scores to disable team editing of the scores for a game as well.
  • For more information, see the League Validation and Score Posting Rules FAQ

Customizing Your Scoring Rules

Using the Options tab on the top right of the Admin Schedule page, you can change many of the SCORE ENTRY RULES Settings. Some examples of custom settings are:

- Do not let teams enter scores at all. HQ only entry.
- Do not auto-post team score entries to opponent - the other team can review before they save the entries.

- Various options for sending email notices whenever any score is updated.

- Set a deadline for editing, up to 21 days. (If you set 2 days, each game will become locked from any team editing, 2 days after the game was played.)

Refer to the help topics for the Schedule page Options for more details. Some settings may cause other settings to deactivate or cause conflicts, so you may wish to contact support for help with these advanced settings.

SCHEDULE - OPTIONS FAQ

Options - Score Posting Options

The Auto-Update Opponents Score option (default)

This is the default. Teams can post scores for each other. When a team posts the scores, they will update the other team and the HQ site as well. The other team can review the stats entered for them, and report a dispute if the numbers are incorrect.

Each Team Enters Their Own Score option

With this option, each team can still enter the scores for both teams, which will update on their site and the HQ site only.

- The record will update for only the teams that entered their scores.

- When the opposing team edits the scores, they will still have empty boxes to enter the scores. If they attempt to enter something different than what was posted by the other team, it will notify them. If they save the disputed scores, the game will go into dispute.

- On the HQ site, the Scores button will either be pink or yellow (Home or Away) if only one team has entered the scores. When both teams enter the scores, the button will turn green.

- The HQ administrator can edit and finalize scores for both teams.
