Game 1 Highlights - Mariners win Game 1 of the Championship Series by a score of 6-4. Back-to-back home runs by Steve Aurigemma and John Morrissey broke a 4-4 tie in the 8th inning. Josh Burgos pitched a complete game and struck out seven Red Sox batters. Defensively, Dan Slate made the play of the game when he hauled in a fly ball at the warning track in centerfield, then fired a strike to John Barone at third base to double-up a runner, ending the 5th inning.
Game 2 Highlights – Mariners won Game 2, clinching their 4th HVNABA title in six years by a score of 3-1 over the NY Red Sox. Marty Hand was excellent on the mound, throwing a complete game four-hitter, striking out 12. This was Hand’s 13th Win of the year, regular season and playoffs combined. The M’s defense played errorless baseball and Ryan Butcher turned the team’s second outfield-assisted double play of the series to end a Sox threat in the 6th inning.
Offensively, Hand drove in the team’s first run with a bases-loaded single to left field in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 1-1. The M’s took the lead the next inning when Sven Jenkins led off with a single, followed by Dan Slate reaching on a hit-and-run error by the second baseman. John Barone drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Then came the play of the game… Steve Aurigemma hit a fielder’s choice ground ball that scored Jenkins for a 2-1 lead, and moments later Slate followed Jenkins home when he stole on an unsuspecting Red Sox pitcher before he re-took the mound.
Next up for the Mariners is the NABA World Series in Jupiter, Florida…
