History & Legacy
Before the championships, the banners and the Cavaliers name, there was an opportunity to build something for Petersburg. This is the story of how it began — and the legacy that continues today.
Before the Cavaliers
The roots of the Petersburg Cavaliers can be traced to basketball at Virginia State University, where future Cavaliers owner and head coach Kyle Dixon coached successful intramural teams and developed relationships with players throughout the local basketball community.
Those relationships eventually created an opportunity to become involved with a new semi-professional basketball organization in Petersburg. What began as an opportunity to assist and learn would quickly become something much larger.
The Petersburg Revolution
The organization entered East Coast Basketball League competition in 2016 as the Petersburg Revolution. During a period of unexpected leadership transition, Dixon accepted the responsibility of leading the team and began building a program on the fly.
The inaugural season quickly established Petersburg as a competitive force. After dropping its opening game, the Revolution responded with eight consecutive victories and completed the regular season with a 9–3 record.
The season produced championship-level success, a postseason run and Coach of the Year recognition for Dixon — establishing the competitive standard that would follow the organization into its next era.
From Revolution to Cavaliers
Following the inaugural season, the organization entered a new chapter. Rather than allowing basketball in Petersburg to disappear, the program moved forward under a new identity: the Petersburg Cavaliers.
Burgundy and gold became the colors of the organization, connecting the team visually to the city it represents. The new identity marked more than a name change. It represented stability, ownership, accountability and a long-term commitment to building a basketball program Petersburg could call its own.
A Tradition Takes Shape
Season by season, the Cavaliers developed into one of the enduring organizations in the East Coast Basketball League. Players from Petersburg, Virginia State University, the surrounding region and beyond became part of the program.
The standard remained consistent: discipline, brotherhood, community and legacy. Those principles became the foundation for repeated postseason appearances, conference success and eventually the organization's first ECBL league championship.
Founding Legacy — 2016
There are no Petersburg Cavaliers without the players, coaches and supporters who helped carry the organization through its inaugural season as the Petersburg Revolution.
The members of that first team competed through uncertainty, represented Petersburg and established the foundation upon which the Cavaliers were built. Their place in organizational history is permanent.
Cavaliers Hall of Fame
The Petersburg Cavaliers Hall of Fame will recognize the players, coaches and contributors whose performance, leadership and impact helped shape the organization.
Hall of Fame profiles will preserve each inductee's era, role, accomplishments and contribution to Petersburg basketball — including deserving figures from the organization's Petersburg Revolution roots.
