Former Comets Player and Coach Help Start Central Ohio Girls High School Flag Football
On April 6, 2025 Girls Varsity High School Flag Football launches in Central Ohio! While currently a club sport the entire sport is gaining momentum to becoming a recognized OHSAA sport. Former Comets Assistant Coach M.D. Ferguson and player C.J. Johnson are involved with one of the area start up high schools. Johnson is the Head Coach and Ferguson is the Associate Head Coach with the Whitehall Yearling High School Rams Varsity Flag Football Team.
The pair have been putting the 20 plus players through learning offense and defense these past weeks. Several Sunday weekend games begin with round robin play between Central Ohio Teams. Congratualations to both of them for stepping forward and getting this sport off the ground in Central Ohio. Best of luck to the Rams team. Girls High School Flag Football is one of the fastest growing high school sports and many colleges have begun to offer scholarships.
"This is exciting to begin in the Central Ohio area and we look forward to the future of high school girls flag football growing," said Johnson. She continued "Coach Ferguson has been advocating for this sport to become a reality for many years, and we are both excited to help launch it and the possibility of college scholarships for our players in college flag football."

Comets attend Columbus Final Regular Season Geme
In attendance at the final home game and final regular season game of the current Columbus and regional football team, the ColumbusChaos were many past Comets players.
Each football seaon on the final home date, the Chaos honor those players for prior womens football teams in the Columbus area. Those in attendance had an excellent time re-connecting with former players and Coach M.D. Ferguson before, at half-time and after the game.
Set your clock now to be in attendance at the 2025 Alumnae game.
Stephanie Stevens, Columbus Comets Running Back (# 37)
The Columbus Comets Family is saddened by the death of this great team mate, person, and mentor to many. We treasure our time and memories of being her team mate, knowing her and her son Dallas — who came to so many practices.
Stephanie Stevens (number 37) - - Slan Go Foill (slawn go foyle) as the Irish grandmas taught us to say. It generally means “goodbye for now” and implies that we will meet again.
Well 37 this is the sentiment of your Comet team mates. Team and Fans: read this Irish prayer: “Those we love do not go away. They walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard but always near. Still loved, still missed”.

Number 37: Great player, Great Teammate, Great Parent, Excellent Person
Now on that Comet team with Coach Darrell McDade, Chrissy Fowler (29), Angie Nelson (31), and Latasha Dailey (83). “Still loved and missed”.

Big Fan/Supporter of Columbus Comets Has Died

Mr. Jackson, was the original "Voice of the Comets" and the inaugural game-day game announcer. He was a strong supporter of the Comet team, individual players and coaches. His warmth and personality showed with all interactions. The thoughtful commentary and great nick-names that he developed for players were always appreciated.
We could never thank him enough for his work with the team and support of the team, players, and for women's football.

Former Comet defensive player Dionjaleah Jones has been selected to play in an upcoming national showcase football game. On November 18 she will participate in the Dream Big Holiday Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Congratulations Coach -- this was hard to find but your efforts are always appreciated.
Here is a quote from USWNT Carli Lloyd, an all time great soccer player with one reason she retired -- it is about team and team culture:
"One of the most decorated players in the history of the United States, Carli Lloyd, had some things to say speaking with her former teammate Hope Solo on the Hope Solo Speaks podcast earlier this week. Lloyd retired at the end of last season with NJ/NY Gotham and has over 316 appearances with the national team, where she's scored 134 goals while winning gold at the Olympics twice, winning the world cup twice and the SheBelieves Cup four times.
Lloyd clarified some of these comments in a video she posted where she said, "And by culture, I am referring to mentality, respect for coaches, teammates, support staff. I am also talking about the drive, the desire, the hunger, the fight, the accepting the role and doing it to the best of your ability."

This is a Reason Why We Compete!
Here is a link to a story -- not about football but wrestling. However, many women players can relate to this story of not being able to compete in a boy's sport -- especially since Title IX.

T.C. Barnes (number 17)- - Slán Go Foill (slawn go foyle) as the Irish grandmas taught us to say. It generally means "goodby for now" and implies that we will meet again. Well 17 this is a sentiment of many Comets. There is an Irish prayer used when someone dies: "Those we love do not go away. They walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard but always near. Still loved, still missed".
17 - - Great player, great teammate, excellent person.
Now on that Comet team with Coach McDade, Chrissy Fowler, (29), Angie Nelson (31) and Latasha Dailey (83). "Still loved, still missed".

Congrats to this high school female player. Participation in football for yourng women continues to grow which is good for the adult women's leagues and teams.
Sports Illustrated Article on Womens Football History:
This is a great article and talks about the 1970's Columbus women's football team (Columbus Pacesetters). It also acknowledges Paralee Adams as the trailblazing women who was the first be a coach in professional football.
It also notes the incoming women's team in Columbus who will start to play in 2022 in the Women's Football League (WFA).

2021 Season Begun
A number of other WFA teams took off the 2021 season nevertheless the seasons are underway for many of the women's football leagues.
Reports of games not played due to Covid-19 illness have led to cancellation and/or forfeiture of games -- despite the downward trend of cases on a national basis.
Update: Franklin County in "Purple" Covid-19 Status
The State of Ohio has continued Franklin County (the county which the Comets are located in the state) as "Purple" status. This is the highest status level that the state assigns to rank the Covid-19 outbreak. It also means the risk of infection and/or transmission is high and that continued observance of practices for safety and
well-being of residents is important. It is not known how the state of Ohio would have allowed or not allowed fans into games for the Comets. Only recently have some sports had limited fans at sporting events as granted by the state. Further, the home venue site would also have had input into use of the stadium, fans, etc.
The hope to re-start for the 2022 year continues for the Comets and the many other teams who are also not having a season this year due to Covid-19.
Update: 2021 WFA Schedule Released
The WFA released the 2021 season schedule. An interesting pattern emerged with the schedule posting.
More WFA teams than the Columbus Comets choose not to have a 2021 football season. Most likely due to COVID-19, concern for player health, concern of travelling or the variant virus, and/or concern for lack of preparation for players to be in physical game shape to participate with the high level of play in the WFA. Cases continue to be high in many midwestern states and the COVID-19 variant is taking hold on a more fierce level.
From the schedule here is a list of who is not playing:
Columbus Comets (D2)
Cleveland Fusion (D2)
New York Wolves (D2)
Pittsburgh Passion (D1)
St. Louis Slam (D1)
Toledo Reign (D3)
Carolina Scorpion (D3)
First State Lioness (D3)
Kansas City Lady Saints (D3)
Memphis Sabercats (D3)
New England Crush (D3)
2021 Comets Season Suspended on January 30, 2021

This can only grow the opportunities for girls and women. And to this webpage I add the below item on this webpage earlier this year:
A Non-Comet Update: However Potentially Important for Female High School Juniors and Seniors who play sports
High school girls can now take advantage of a new emerging sport in the NAIA colleges (NAIA= National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). This sport is Flag Football and it is going live in Spring 2021. Here is a section from the introductory press release: "With support from NFL FLAG and RCX, NAIA will work to develop league infrastructure and operations for the first women’s flag football competition governed by a collegiate athletics association." The NAIA website is www.naia.org
(FYI 1: Even if you are a recent high school, graduate and have NAIA eligibility you could contact a school and get in contact with a college to pursue an opportunity to play flag football at an NAIA college.)
Flag football will be joining bowling and wrestling as sports that are trending upward for young women to earn scholarships and attend college.
Here is a comment about flag football at the college level by Head Coach Angellica Grayson -- head coach at University of St. Mary (KS): " This is definitely a game changer for all the ladies that are athletes…Being able to play beyond high school is an excellent opportunity and an additional avenue for the ladies to get an education..."
(FYI 2: University of St. Mary athletics flag football website is http://www.gospires.com/womens-flag-football)
Therefore, if this is something of interest keep it on the radar as the exit from high school sports is done.

2021 Season Tryout Date Announced:

The Comets will have their tryout on that date. The Comets time and location to be announced – but get registered on the Comets home page and come play for one of the premier women’s football teams in the world.
Go to www.columbuscomets.org to register for the Comets tryout.
Questions? Email Head Coach Hank Patterson at hpatters@columbus.rr.com
This will be for all offense, defense and special teams positions, including long snappers, kickers, punters. More details to follow. Get those cleats ready!
If you are not able to make that date, send Coach Patterson an email and ask about any other tryout option.
2021 Season Tryout Drill Tip Number 1:
The 40 Yard Dash Drill
Purpose: Measure tryout players speed and see the finish at the end of the 40 yards.
How the drill is done:
Line up at starting line (track sprinter stance, 3 point stance) and take off running in a straight line for 40 yards. Three points that are looked at during the run:
10 yards: Measure power and see how the player got off the starting line (and are they running standing full up or just getting out of the lean). Are the players pumping their arms?
20 yards: Measure your ability to get to accelerate. How long to top speed?
40 yards: Now it is down to endurance, does the player start stopping before passing the 40 yards, does the player stop right away at 40 yards, does the player continue to explode through at highest speed and past the 40 yards for a few more yards? Does the player close hard and continue or “throttle” down?
This drill is run at least two times, perhaps three times. With each run coaches are looking for a decrease in the time run. (want to know a good time for each position -- keep reading down this website and there are times noted from a past post).
Here is a big tip for this drill: When coming out of the start, keep the chin down to avoid rising up too quickly. Standing up too fast, will limit the power of the leg drive. Aim to stay low for the first 15 to 20 yards of the sprint.
2021 Season Be Ready Alert
Be ready: November 7, 2020. Mark the date on your calendar.
2021 Season Mini-Camp &Tryout Update Number 2:
The Columbus Comets tryout date(s) are about to be released. Get ready to come and tryout for one of the premier football teams in the U.S.A. Keep watching this page in the next few days for the initial tryout date.
If interested send the information through the Columbus Comets official webpage under the registration tab.
2021 Season Mini-Camp &Tryout Update (#1)
There are no current date(s) for the Comets 2021 season mini-camp and tryouts. Part of this could be the Covid-19 situation continues to keep the 2021 season in flux and the numbers of cases may be influencing the min-camp date.
However, the registration window for prospective players and those transferring from other teams is open. The Comets official web page (www.columbuscomets.org) is where to sign up. Questions should be addressed to the Head Coach Hank Patterson at hpatters@columbus.rr.com. And if you want to include more information about your skills, experience as an athlete, have a general question etc. that is where you can email him.
Nominations Open for Women's Football Hall of Fame
The nomination portal for nominations for the 2020 Class in the Women's Football Hall of Fame has now opened. The Comets have one HOF member who played for the Comets (Stephanie Jeffers, OL/DL, inducted 2018). In the Flames/Comets history there are certainly players who are more than worthy of being in the Women's Football Hall of Fame.
Information is below:
“Nominations are now being accepted for players, coaches or contributors for the Women's Football Hall of Fame. The next induction ceremony will be in December 2020 in Las Vegas, NV.
Any fan may nominate any player, coach or contributor who has been involved with women's football by completing the nomination form (link below).
The only restriction is that a Player or Coach must have participated for a minimum of 10 years OR has retired from the sport. There is no mandatory retirement period for a contributor before he/she may be considered.
https://forms.gle/adGqrte1uB8FvRM17
Please note that a nomination is not a VOTE for election. Every nomination of an eligible candidate received will be processed and forwarded to the Women's Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.”
A Non-Comet Update: However Potentially Important for Female High School Juniors and Seniors who play sports

Therefore, if this is something of interest keep it on the radar as the exit from high school sports is done.
2121 Season FYI:
So in the midst of this non-season it is still time to look ahead to next year's season. Early registration for the tryout/mini-camp can be completed by incoming players and/or transfer players.
The Comets website has the registration page that can be completed. This will allow the head coach to keep in touch when tryout time is nearer (based on the medical COVID 19 recommendations etc.)
In the meantime it is always time to increase stamina, speed, agility, and flexibility towards tryout and mini-camp time.
June 23, 2020: Anniversary of Title IX
(thanks Senator Birch Bayh, Indiana [D])
June 23, 2020 is an important date in women's sports history. The women who play and coach football (as well as all other sports) should take a moment a note this date as the 48th anniversary of Title IX amendment. The date of passage was June 24, 1972.
This was a huge amendment and dealt with more than women in sports. From Fox Sports webpage and a University of Minnesota webpage the below is shared:
The WHAT it is:
Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the United States that was passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It states:
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Title IX was implemented as an addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which sought to end discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It applies to all educational institutions, both public and private, that receive federal funds.
The tie in to why so many girls and women can play sports now or grew up playing sports:
The law is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, considering sports programs are a large part of schools and universities. Since it was enacted, female athletic programs have hugely benefited, and sports have seen an influx of female participation.
Statistics to read and know:
According to The National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education, in 1971–72, just 7% of girls (294,051) played high school sports.
However, by 2013-14, 42% of girls (3.2 million) participated.
Moreover, in college sports in 1971-72, fewer than 30,000 women participated. By 2010-11, that number exceeded 190,000.
In 1972, women received only 2% of schools’ athletic budgets, and athletic scholarships for women did not exist.
In 2009-11, women received 48% of the total athletic scholarship dollars at Division 1 schools.
One more thing:
Did you know that in the 40+ years after the passage of Title IX, female sport participation is at an all-time high but the percentage of women coaching women at the collegiate level has declined from 90+% in 1974 to near an all-time low today of 40%? That is the same for high school girls or ages younger than high school.
So... go find a girls' sport and coach those girls, they need women coaches and mentors. Thank the women who are coaching girls and women and know the trailblazers are in coaching that are women.
Some Women's Football History
So in the hiatus of Comet football how about some women's football history. After this first one more to follow so check back.
To begin here is the name of the first female coach in women's football:
Coach Paralee Adams
Coach Adams, in 1978, with the Columbus Pacesetters Women's Football Team acknowledged to be "the first female football coach in America." (source: http://www.angelfire.com/sports/womenfootball/Columbus.html)
Comets COVID-19 Update Number Five
WFA Press Release on 2020 Season
"The health and safety of everyone associated with the Women’s Football Alliance including players, coaches, fans and their communities is and will continue to be our No. 1 priority as we navigate the ongoing health crisis related to the Coronavirus (“Covid-19”) Pandemic. At this time, the WFA Board has decided to suspend hosting a championship season in 2020.
On March 12, 2020, the WFA Board made the announcement to delay the commencement of our 2020 season in the hopes that our communities would start to see a flattening of the infection curve. We tentatively planned to return to the football field in May, with games to commence in June. With the most recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and the Office of the President of the United States, that goal is not possible. Since there is no current timeframe for a safe return, we decided to suspend our season in the hopes that organizations can turn their efforts to the more pressing needs in their families and communities.
As we receive more clarity in the coming weeks, the WFA will work with our board, team ownership, the Players Advisory Council and our sponsors to find ways to progress on our mission to continue the growth of women’s tackle football at the highest competitive level.
These options could range from virtual events and clinics in the summer, to exhibition games, regional tournaments, or bowl games when travel and group gatherings are deemed safe.
All of us would like nothing better than to see more women on the football field as soon as we can be comfortable that it is safe. We will provide further updates when those plans come into focus.
While this news is disappointing, we want to remind everyone that 2020 has already brought many significant achievements for the WFA. In preparation for the 2020 season, the WFA signed a television network deal with Eleven Sports which is currently showcasing previously recorded games on their channel until live action can be broadcasted. In addition, we secured the largest in-kind sponsor given to a women’s football league from Procter and Gamble (Secret). Their support will allow the next WFA Championship to have a full national television production and provide championship teams financial support for travel expenses. Other major sponsorships secured included KT Tape, Wilson, Coors, Glazier Clinics, Xenith Helmets, Adenation, and Prizmatic Solutions. We also have a rising number of former players coaching full time in the NFL and their success has helped make the WFA a household name in women’s football with over 1100 articles in every major news outlet mentioning the Women’s Football Alliance from January to April of 2020.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of the essential personnel who are taking care of our community. We stand united in encouraging our community to stay home and follow the guidelines set out by the CDC, WHO and our respective states. WFA management will continue to work with our teams to assist them as they navigate these troubling times. We are committed to coming into 2021 stronger and more united than ever."
end of press release by WFA.
Comets COVID-19 Update Number Four
The Comets season continues to be on hold. There will continue to be no practices or games. The WFA has postponed the season until June 6, 2020.
Comets COVID-19 Update Three
The Comets season continues to be on hold as of April 20, 2020. This coming week Ohio's Governor will give an update on "re-opening" Ohio - businesses, parks, restaurants, schools (the place the Comets and other Ohio women's football teams hold their contests) etc. The Comets continue to "shelter in place" and work out on their own, learning plays etc.

Comets COVID-19 Update Two
The Comets season continues to be on hold. The team and players are not getting together for practices or as a team/group until at least May 2, 2020. The re-start of practice or group activities is of course dependent upon many State of Ohio governmental agencies. The Ohio Governor ordered the state's residents to "stay at home" until at least May 1. That halted practices and team groups etc. Depending on what the Governor decides about schools it may preclude many teams in Ohio and other states from having game sites --- if schools are closed then no high school football field games sites will be available.
Head Coach Hank Patterson has been carefully monitoring the health news and State of Ohio information on COVID-19. Comet players are reviewing plays, game film, and waiting for the future on WFA football for the 2020 season.
Comets Player Returns to Columbus from the 2020
1st Americas Womens Bowl Game
The Comets are glad to have one of its own back on USA soil. Offensive line player Carolyn O'Leary had been involved in the 1st Americas Bowl Games in Honduras. Players were stranded when the Honduras borders were closed due to Covid 19.
Read her statements and story on Columbus' Channel 6 News. This appeared on March 27, 2020 on the channels Good Day Columbus program.
Comets Season Delayed by COVID-19
The Comets season, as for the other WFA teams, has been suspended until May 2, 2020. The WFA followed many other pro leagues in not conducting games during the COVID-19 outbreak. That would place the first game for the 2020 season, if held, as a home game against the Pittsburgh Passion.
Come back to this page for more details as they are released by the WFA.
Comets Roster Has Been Updated
The Comets roster has been updated. Take a look at the 2020 team.
Comets Player Named to International Football Team Roster
The Comets have another player who has been named to play on one of the U.S. Women's Football Team teams. The player is veteran offensive line player Carolyn O'Leary. She will compete with Team USA in the 1st Americas Womens Bowl Games. These games will begin March 13, 2020 in Honduras. Congratulations and good luck in the game. See the America Womens Bowl Game website for more details and if you want to help financially to support the social cause these teams are working with.
Comets Set Scrimmage Date
The Comets have been hard at practice the past few months. It is about scimmage time before the start of the 2020 season. Scrimmage date is set and it is March 21, 2020.
Comets Hold Player Contract Signing for 2020 Season
Thanks to Columbus Short North restaurant Lemongrass for hosting the 2020 season player signing event. The event was held and with much fanfare the players were called to the signing table and signed by Head Coach Hank Patterson. Another step in the season towards the championship game.
Special Guest To Comets 2020 Practice Session
The Comets had a special guest attend the February 8, 2020 practice session. Coach Ron Burrell came to the practice and spent time talking to the current roster and even dispensing coaching tips and advice to lineman and other players.
Coach Burrell was an original coach with the Columbus Flames and then Comets. His last season of coaching was 2007.
Comets 2020 Season Schedule Now Posted
The Women's Football Alliance (WFA) has posted the league schedule for 2020. The Comets have a great first game and that trend of difficult opponents continues each week.
Check the toolbar on this page as well as the official Comets page for details.
The 2020 Superbowl (its tie-in to the WFA and Columbus Pacesetters Women's Football Team)
Many football fans have learned the 2020 Superbowl features a former WFA player. Former West Michigan Mayhem player Katie Sowers now holds an assistant coach position for the San Francisco 49ers. What WFA coach or player is not thrilled to see this growth of our players and coaches. Congratulations to Coach Sowers, keep pushing the boundaries and helping the next group of young women.
However, here is an important historical note about women coaches with football. According to a website article on the Columbus Pacesetters Women's Football Team, (1970's) (www.angelfire.com) Sowers and all women football coaches belong to a family tree of women coaches that began with the Pacesetters.
The team's first season was in 1974 and one of the first year players was Paralee Adams (5'2, 127 pounds, HB/DB).
Here is the historical fact and the beginning of the women's football coaching tree. It begins with Paralee Adams coaching the Pacesetters. "1978 Coach Adams became the first female coach in America." That is correct she is acknowledged to be the first women to coach football in the U.S.A. with the rest of the womens coaches following in her footprints.
So on Superbowl Sunday 2020 and into the women's league games of 2020 each women coach has a legacy to follow of Coach Adams. She is the one who started the coaching for women and much appreciation to her. Thanks Coach Adams from all of us.
Comets 2020 Roster Update

Comets Selected to Play in December Hall of Fame Game
The Comet players are known to be part of the best players throughout the United States.
This fact again was proven out when many Comet players were asked to play with several accepting the invitation to play in the 2019 Women's Football Hall of Fame Game. (Due to various matters other Comets who were asked to play had to decline the HOF Game offer or the Comets would have had greater representation on the East team).
The game will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, December 7, 2019 and the players will compete as part of the East team. Those playing include:
Dia'Sha Pearson,
Dionna Jackson,
Teneicia Barnes.
All of the Comets coaches, players and fans are looking forward to the game. If you are heading out to Vegas to support these players send those photos to the official Comets webpage (www.columbuscomets.org).

Comets Player Placed on International Women's Team
The Columbus Comets running back Pasha Johnson-Rivers has been named to "Team United" (TU). TU, with 30 women players representing many football teams will represent the U.S.A. and play in Toronto, Canada over the 2019 Labor Day weekend. Congratulations for being chosen for this contest.
2019 Comets Tryout FYI (part one)
The Columbus Comets Women's Professional Team will again have tryouts for the 2020 season. No firm date for the tryouts has been set as yet.
1. Women that are interested should contact the head coach, Hank Patterson (email: hpatters@columbus.rr.com) to let him know of interest. Include full name, athletic background, telephone contact number, email contact number, if you have played on another women's football team that team name (position, stats, dates of playing for that team -- why you have left that team), height, weight and any other information.
2. Yes, even in July/August 2019 it is not too soon to email him.
The Comet tryouts are multi-faceted.
One segment includes time runs (10 yards, 20 yards, 40 yards). A key run is the time in the 40 yard dash. An average football play lasts about as long as the 40 yard dash. Below are times for a 40 yard dash for different positions that are accepted by many football coaches. By the way these are not etched in stone - just because the time is not made does not conclude inability to play football. Good players have heart that can take the place of speed.
Position High School University
OL 5.3-6.0 seconds 5.0-5.4 seconds
Tight End 4.8-5.2 4.6-4.8
Quarterback 4.6-4.9 4.5-4.9
Running Back 4.5-4.8 4.4-4.6
Wide Receiver 4.5-4.8 4.4-4.6
DL 4.9-5.2 4.8-5.0
Linebacker 4.7-5.0 4.6-4.8
Defensive Back 4.5-4.9 4.4-4.6

"We have asked members of the Rose Motil family to toss the coin tonight before this important game," said Head Coach Hank Patterson. He continued," Ms. Motil was a defensive back and quarterback for the 1970's Columbus Pacesetters -- the women's football team in the area. She died early last fall and I invited her family to toss the coin. Her legacy, commitment to the sport, and involvement helped set the stage for our Comets team and players to be involved in women's football today. We thank her for her efforts," he continued.
Comets Game Day News FLASH
The Comets move their record to 4-1 after defeating the Cincinnati Sizzle by a score of 54-6.
The Comets return to Huffaker Sports Complex on Saturday, May 18 against long-time rival Cleveland Fusion. The playoff chase continues for both teams and this should be a game for the ages.
Also on May 18 the Comets will have family members of Rose Motil toss the coin. Motil was a pioneer womens football player in the 1970s for the then Columbus Pacesetter as the teams quarterback. Members of the family will also be available in the stands during the game to talk to Comets fans about her, the team and game memories.
Comets Game Day News
for May 4 versus Philadelphia Phantoms: Part Two
The Comets defeat the Philadephia Phantoms on May 4, 2019 by a score of 40-6. The Comets record improves to 3-1. Join the Comets on May 11 at the away game in Cincinnati. Do not let the score fool you this was a hard fought game by both teams.
Comets Game Day News
for May 4 versus Philadelphia Phantoms
The Comets will take on the Phantoms from Philadelphia at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019. "We have prepared for this game and hope to have a satisfactory outcome. The team from Philadelphia is very, very good," said Head Coach Hank Patterson. "They are coming to Columbus following a loss so they are coming motivated to win and we hope to win also," he continued.
Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m., optional reasonable tailgating is held earlier by fans. The weather forecast is perfect for the game. Tickets are still available at the gate.
Comets Record Improves
The Comets will move their 2019 season record to 2-1 following the forfeit vicotry against the Indy Crash o April 27, 2019. The team tried to obtain a replacement game with many WFA teams (who did not want to take on the Comets), as well as football teams from other leagues.
This could impact the Comets playoff chances given it was a victory by a forfeit and a loss of actual game situations. Maybe the WFA has to have a team "on-call" each week in case of teams folding so the remaining team can have a game.
Next game is at home on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Big time game when the Philadelphia Phantoms arrive in Columbus.
Comets Even Record with April 13 Home Victory
The Comets evened their 2019 record to 1-1 on Saturday, April 13. This was a home game against rival Derby City Dynamite. The final score was 20-8. The Comets next play in Indianapolis against the Indy Crash.
This was the 99th victory for the Comets team, Head Coach Hank Patterson and his long time coaching staff.
The game was played in warm weather conditions, featured a balanced offensive attack by the Comets, with an improving defensive showing. The crowd was large and full of Comets fans.
Comets Season to Begin in Away Contest on April 6, 2019
The Comets will have their first game of the season with a 7:00 p.m. kick-off on Saturday, April 6, 2019. The game is away against the Detroit Dark Angels. The Angels pulled out the 2018 game victory with a last second touchdown pass.
"We are ready to start the season," said Head Coach Hank Patterson. "We hope to play and coach well as a team and bring home enough victories to keep moving forward this season."
Comets Plan Scrimmage to Ready for Season
The Comets will have a game simulated scrimmage this coming weekend beginning at noon. "This will allow us to see alot of our players in game like conditions and gauge how our training camp and coaching efforts have been to date," said Head Coach Hank Patterson.
Comets Plan Fan Activity on Sunday, March 10
The Comets will have a fan meet and greet on Sunday, March 10 at the Skate Zone. Skate Zone is the skating location that is seen on I-71 going north.
Visit the Columbus Comets Facebook page for all the details, costs, and times of the event.

February 6, 2019 is designated as National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

There were always "pioneers" who helped us all get to this level and thanks and congratulations to them.

2019 Great Story Part Three: Dejah Rondeau (New Hampshire)
The NFL Super Bowl is a few days. It seems to this webpage that there are so many stories beginning to get into the media about young girls and their playing football -- and on boy's teams. (It is almost enough to start a blog page on to keep track -- but read on in this website for many of them that this webpage has read about and profiled on this page. Keep going young ladies all of you starting to play or thinking of playing -- that is the thought here).
Anyway, another story has come to light concerning a New England young women (come on those WFA teams in New England invite her to a game this season -- just don't let the Comets be the only one to invite her).
The first story about Dejah Rondeau is an on-line story found on seacoastonlin.com. It it titled "She's one tough quarterback" and was written by Alex LaCasse and posted on November 1, 2018. It chronicles her first year of play as a quarterback on the Exeter Seahawks (wearing number 11 -- the same number as former Comets great QB Crystal Davis). For her participation in the sport she was welcomed by some in the school by being the object of classmate bullying. She stayed strong and kept playing.
The second story is a follow-up that the New England Patriots had invited her to the Pats headquarters. She met the team owner, Julian Edelman and received alot of VIP treatment.
The November 11 story also mentions two other females who play football in the Exeter community (although they were not invited to the Patriots headquarters etc.). Those two are Faelynne Johnson and Julia Shupe.
According to the Exeter Seahawks Youth Football Website (leaguelineup.com) here is more information about all three of the players.
Faelynne Johnson, Number 39
Dejah Rondeau, Number 11
Julia Shupe, Number 17
One final note -- all of these young women (as we have with the others profiled in earlier website editions) are welcome to attend and be the guest of the Columbus Comets at one of our homegames -- we hope they can visit Columbus and take in a womens professional football game. Congratulations to each of them and best of luck.
Three more future Comets are in the making.
2019 Great Story Part Two: Rose Motil Family to conduct coin toss
During the 2019 season, in an as yet to be determined home game, Head Coach and CEO of the Comets has invited the family of Rose Motil to conduct a coin toss. Ms. Motil was a player in the 1970's with the womens football team, Columbus Pacesetters. She was the quarterback for the team and passed away in September 2018.
2019 Great Story Part One: Mikayela Billiott
The NFL playoffs are in full go mode. One of the recent storylines to come out of the playoffs involved 1) Mikayela Billiott; Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and 3) U of Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban.
Go to tps://www.nola.com/expo/sports/erry-2018/08/715f5d858b9480/a-girl-a-team-and-a-dream-how.html to read the whole story. Or in a search engine type How Drew Brees, Sean Payton are encouraging a young girl to pursue her football dreams. This nola.com article was written by Jeff Duncan and posted on August 8, 2018.
Here is another young girl with a football dream and a football plan. She was able to meet Coach Payton, QB Drew Brees and wants to play college ball at Alabama.
Hopefully she can make it to Columbus this 2019 season and see the Comets in action, and meet some women football players.
Best of luck to her.
2019 Season Schedule is Complete
The 2019 Comets schedule has been completed and published by the WFA. The Comets remain in the Northeast League, North Conference in Division II.
The season starts with an away game on April 6, 2019 in Detroit against the Dark Angels. This team defeated the Comets on Hail Mary touchdown pass in the 2018 season to begin the season. Other opponents include: Derby City Dynamite - April 13 at home; Indy Crash - April 27 at Indy; Philadelphia Phantomz - May 4 at home; Cincinnati Sizzle - May 11 at Cincy; Cleveland Fusion - May 18 at home; D.C. Divas - May 25 in Washington, D.C., Detroit Dark Angels - June 8 at home.
For more details consult the Comets official web page.
Former Comets Player Inducted into Womens Football Hall of Fame
The Comets have a former player recently inducted into the Womens Football Hall of Fame (WHOF). Congratulations to Stephanie Jeffers, former lineman for the Comets from 2008 to 2011. Her great play with the Comets lead to All-American status and a trip to the national championship. She moved to Boston in 2012 and since has played for the Boston teams.
The Comets are proud that she laid her foundation for great play through playing with us and receiving our coaching help. She has always been generous in acknowledging the foundation the Comet players and coaches made in her play as an elite football player.
No doubt in the future other Comets will be in the Womens Football Hall of Fame -- who do you think qualifies for this elite group? In future post we will share potential names.
2019 Season Pre-Season Indoor Camp Ready to Go

CHESAPEAKE, VA (WAVY) -
Amanda Shepps isn't on the team to just wear a jersey and helmet. And she's proven to be much more than a field goal kicker for Grassfield High School.
Head coach Martin Asprey calls Shepps, "an impact player for the Grassfield Grizzlies."
Maybe no player had a bigger impact than Shepps in Grassfield's 24-20 win over Lakeland on Friday night. The Grizzlies' senior starting place-kicker went three-for-three on extra points, drilled a 26-yard field goal, and made a touchdown-saving tackle on kick return coverage in the third quarter.
"I wasn't going to let him score. I wasn't going to do that," said Shepps, who doesn't want her football career to end at the end of this season.
She attended a one-day specialist camp at Virginia Tech this past offseason, and got to spend considerable time with defensive coordinator Bud Foster, and head coach Justin Fuente.
"He was amazing," Shepps said of Fuente, "I've never met someone so charismatic, and out-going. And he was so welcoming."
Shepps has already sent her application to Tech, and one day hopes she can walk on to the Hokies football team.
"It's a dream of mine, and I think it would be amazing if it could come true," she said.
A reliable kicker, who can also tackle? Sounds like a future Comet player.

Members of the Columbus Comets offer condolences to the family of Rose Motil.
Rose was a quarterback for the Columbus Pacesetters. The Pacesetters were the womens professional football team representing Central Ohio in the 1970's.
Head Coach Hank Patterson stated "we offer our condolences on the loss of Ms. Motil to her family. In our coming 2019 season we will honor her play and are appreciative of all of her talents to have advanced the game for women."

Tryout Location with contact information and address:
Stars Indoor Sports (614-985-3003)
6124 Busch Blvd.
Columbus, OH 43229
What to bring and wear for the tryout (it can be cold in this building so bring layers):
1. Rookies/Tryouts:
T-shirt, gym shorts (neither of these should ever be red in color), turf cleats and/or running shoes, personal water (suggested one gallon bottle), mouthpiece (suggested)
2. Veterans and/or Transfer Players:
Bring helmet and shoulder pads, mouthpiece to all sessions. Bring your own personal water (suggested one gallon bottle) . Never wear red shorts or shirt to tryout and/or practice sessions.
New players should take note to the following information noted below that was sent out by the Head Coach (these two items are bold):
NOTE:
1. Rookie players will not be required to purchase a helmet and shoulder pad until you have been measured by the Comet coaching staff.
Here is a fyi to those who are trying out and are serious about playing.
If you are confident that you can make the team and play, you should start saving money now to buy a helmet and shoulder pad once you have been measured instead of not having the funds available for that immediate purchase.
The longer in the mini-camp tryout process that ones does not have helmet and shoulder pad the further behind she falls in drills, learning positions, getting practice reps, etc. Having the $200-300 dollars saved up before the first tryout date will allow you to quickly get in contact with places like Riddell Helmets, Rawlings (helmets and shoulder pads) or Football America (helmets, shoulder pads).
One final note -- players will also be expected to pay other fees in a short amount of time -- so save for those costs also.
2. Contact drills will be performed during all practice sessions. No player(s) or tryout personnel will perform contact drills without proper protection. Please be advised.
Question(s) about the mini-camp tryout should be directed to the head coach email (hpatters@columbus.rr.com) or call 614-284-3652. You should also go to the Comets official webpage and register on the page. Remember no football playing experience is necessary.
To Answer Questions About the 2019 Tryout Process
The Columbus Comets will have tryouts for the 2019 season in upcoming months. There has been alot of interest in the tryout process, team and everything associated with the team (probably from having such a positive season in 2018). From some questions received below is a short answer list (as always consult the Comets head coach for "official" answers).
1. There is no past specific athletic experience needed to tryout. Tryout participants have been general athletes, past athletes in most sports, fitness buffs, weight lifters and power lifters, and some with no past athletic experience. That said you must be 18 at the start of the season (so high school seniors can tryout and practice but need to be 18 at season start or wait till 18 to get into a game). There is no upper age limit (you would be surprised at what age or oldest player had been and she was good).
2. At this writing there is not a tryout fee. Unlike other teams for years the Comets have not had a tryout fee -- so it is feasible that the no fee trend will continue.
3. All positions will have tryouts. No one coming to tryouts should assume that she cannot tryout for any position.
4. That said those who want to place kick the PATs, Kick-off, or punt should probably have prior experience doing or have had some transferrable soccer skills. (It is different kicking a soccer ball and football so watch some You Tube videos on how to kick or punt a football soccer style). This is a different tryout at the same tryouts and you would need to let the special teams coach know you want to tryout for special teams positions.
5. There is a cost during the season. So start saving your money now and look at about $1000.00 dollars, you can get a sponsor for the money (family, friends, work etc.) or you can get a big money sponsor for the entire team.
6. There is a significant amount of time both at practice, watching game film, working out etc. that needs to happen during the pre-season time (and starting now as you read this to get into tryout shape and get limber), during the season (think from April till August 2019). This means that you need to have flexibility with your family situations, babysitting or child care needs, work schedule (the team plays on Saturday, practiced this past year in season on Thursday and Friday night at a minimum [that does not include game film watch time or your needed workout time], inform your family that you may not be at family events, etc.
7. At this point, to answer one other question that has been emailed, you should start to do some working out to be limber (quads, core, hamstrings, muscles), run both sprints (did you play basketball and remember those drills that you ran from one side of the court to the other and back and then kept those distances closing, practice on your own a bit (so if you want to be a QB start learning how to throw correctly, receivers look at how to catch a pass [not like in powder puff or flag], etc. More on this in later posts or read way down on this web page for past information.
8. It is never to early to register on the Columbus Comets organization official page for tryouts. The head coaches email is another way to reach out: hpatters@columbus.rr.com
Update Comets All-Time Win Loss Record: June 30, 2018
The Columbus Comets current all-time record is 98-58. With the 2018 season concluded this leaves Head Coach Hank Patterson two wins shy of the 100 win mark with the Columbus Comets. That should fall in the 2019 season.
However, when factoring in the season as the Columbus Flames the wins are over 100.
Comets Season Ends In Playoff Loss to New York
The Columbus Comets mounted a great effort to deliver a second round playoff victory against the New York Sharks. Despite coming on and to life in the second half, the Comets were defeated 55-36.
The lead at the half was too large to be overcome, mental mistakes, and other factors led to the loss.
The Comets end the 2018 season with an overall record of 7-3.
Comet Players Named to 2018 All-American Game
Several Columbus Comet players have been named by the WFA to the WFA North Division All-American Team.
Included were: Deasha Talley (Wide Receiver); Deonjaleah Jones (Defensive Tackle); and Carrie Hall (Tailback).
This continues the long streak of Comet players being named to the All-American roster. The game will be played in Atlanta during the weekend of the WFA Championship games.
Comets Win First Round Playoff Game (it was a squeaker)
In first round WFA playoff action the Comets squeaked by the host team Philadelphia Phantoms by. score of 22-14. The Comets scored a late game touchdown to secure the lead and game. "That was a hard fought game by both teams", said Head Coach Hank Patterson.
With this win the Comets advance in the 2018 WFA Division 2 playoffs. On June 30, the team will travel to Aviator Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.C. to take on the New York Sharks.
"The Sharks are a really talented team, and placed numerous players on this years 2018 All-American team. This will be a tough tough game for us, it is a long road trip," said Head Coach Hank Patterson.
The Comets season record is now 7-2.
Comets Playoff Exclusive
The 2018 Comets are going to the playoffs!
The first playoff game will be against the tough, tough team from Philly. The Comets will travel to Philly for the game on Saturday, June 16. One determining factor will be how the game is officiated -- it must be neutral and not biased against the Comets.
Head Coach Hank Patterson said "This will be a great game against a worthy opponent. The players from Philly are very skilled, and explosive in many facets of the game. Our challenge is before us next weekend."
It was a long regular season for the Comets to get back into the playoff games. While retiring Christie Sabatucci closed out her regular season games she is "excited to be given more chances to continue playing."
So fans head to the Comets facebook page and post your guess for the score for each team as well as who the winner will be.
Update Comets Game on June 9, 2018
The WFA has a large fee that is to be paid by teams that forfeit a game. So the Flint City team had second thoughts and came to Columbus and played the final game. In a game delayed by a huge storm and many lightening delays it finally got played and finished. The final score was 72-0 with the win taken by the Comets. This moves the Comets record to 6-2.
Stay tuned to see if the Comets are in the playoffs or not.
Comet Alumnae in the House
There were so many past Comet players who came to the 2018 alum game. most of them looked like she could still suit up and play.
Thanks for all of them that showed. As always looking forward to seeing each of you in the future years at the games and event (plus practices drop by). For those that could not make it this year put it on your 2019 to-do list.
Update Comets All-Time Win Loss Record: June 18, 2018
The Columbus Comets current all-time record is 98-57. If the Columbus Flames season is factored into the equation, Head Coach Hank Patterson has reached 100 victories in professional womens football play.
Former Comets Player Killed in Columbus Shooting
The Comets family has lost a former player in recent days.
Latasha Dailey, number 83 died on May 26, 2018 from gun shot wounds she received a few days prior. Latasha was a player for the Comets and hailed Youngstown, Ohio as her hometown.
"She was a maturing player and grew better with each practice and game", said Head Coach Hank Patterson. He continued, "she left her mark on the team and we offer our condolences to her family and friends".
Comets Record Stands at 5-2
With the win over the Fusion on June 2, the Comets advanced their 2018 season record to 5-2.
This should put the Comets in good stead for a playoff run. At best the team will finish 6-2, and worse case scenario it would be at 5-3. Both of these beat any record that the Philadelphia team can finish at a 4-4 record.
If the Comets were an NFL team it would be in the playoffs over a team having a .500 record (the best that Philadelphia can achieve this season).
So Comets fans we need to wait until the final decision and we will see if the WFA will operate in a true league fashion, with no bias against the Comets and move them into the playoffs. On a general league image and branding matter it is not a potential good thing for the league if the true playoff teams are not in the post season.
Comets Take the Ohio Series Bragging Right for 2018
With. win on June 2 over the Cleveland Fusion, the Comets completed the 2018 series sweep. It has been awhile since the Comets have raken rwo games from the Fusion. The final score was 16-0.
Update Comets All-Time Win Loss Record
The Columbus Comets current all-time record is 95-57.
Moving Into June
The Comets enter June with a 4-2 record. The Comets are coming off a good win against Knoxville. The parts are still being put into place for a potential playoff spot.
The first Saturday in June has the Comets on the road again. The team travels to Cleveland to take on the rival Fusion. This should be an epic game. The final home game will be on June 12 .
Comets Lost Opportunity
The Comets took on long time rival Pittsburgh Passion on Saturday, May 12, 2018. They did not deliver a great mothers day present to any mother of a player or as a player. The final score was 56-8 and this puts the Comets record at 3-2.
The game was hard fought at the start with the Comets battling back to take a 8-7 lead. The floodgates opened when the Comets cornerbacks could not stay with the receivers and this led to the majority of the touchdowns by the Passion.
On a positive note both lines played well and the defensive backs hurt at times learned some valuable lessons against their opponent.
The home stand continues for the Comets on May 19 when they face the Knoxville Lightning at Grove City Christian High School. Kick-off time is 7:00p p.m. - - be in early to take advantage of the Comets gear sales and concession specials.
Comets Move Their Season Record to 3-1
The Comets moved their 2018 season record to 3-1 following a win over long time rival Cleveland Fusion on May 6. The Comets continue to sputter in all three areas of the game but held on to preserve the win.
Next up is another long time rival the Pittsburgh Passion. The Passion will travel to Columbus on May 12 for the only game this season against the Comets. The Passion are off to a great start this season and look to be in playoff form already.
Kick-off will be at 7:00 p.m. at Huffaker Sports Complex. Join what could be a record setting crowd, and visit with the many Comet alumna players who are in attendance in the stands and giving free autographs and selfies.
Fusion Coming To Town Saturday
The Comets have their home opener Saturday, May 6 against the Cleveland Fusion. This long time rivalry will re-ignite with the 7:00 p.m. kick-off. Cleveland has had trouble fielding a team so far this year but will bring
their best against the 2-1 Comets. Tailgate optional.
Comets Defeat Toledo
The Comets played Toledo on Saturday, April 21. While there could be 37 reasons why the Comets won the game suffice to say the win was because of better team play. The Comets record stands at 2-1.
The final score was 22-8. The Comets have their home opener on May 6th versus rival Cleveland. Kick-off time is 7:00 p.m , with optional tailgating pre-game.
Comets Now 1-1 and the Comets Are Not Done!
The Comets came back into the win column in the recent game against Columbus (IN) Vanguard. The Comets defeated the Vanguard by a score of 22-14. Once again it took awhile for the Comets to get into sync and start playing as they can -- but still not reaching full potential. Continued mental miscues in special team play hampers the team, lack of all out speed by special teams contributed to great field position by the Vanguards.
The away games continue this week with the Comets taking on Toledo Reign in Toledo. Keep making those short trips to support the Comets -- the away crowds have been larger than home crowds to this point.
Tuci Catches A Touchdown Pass But It Was Not Enough
The Comets lost its season opener against Detroit Dark Angels. The final score was 28-22.
The Comets battled back to tie the game in the fourth quarter at 22-22. The Dark Angels scored the game winning touchdown with a Hail Mary nine route down their sideline that was caught as "time expired".
The final score was 28-22. The Comets travel to Columbus, Indiana to play the Columbus Vanguard. The Vanguard, who are an expansion team, soundly defeated Flint City by a score of 45-0 to win their first ever game. They will be a formidable opponent for the Comets.
Even in defeat the Comets showed some spunk, improved play during the game, battled the cold elements and home team officiating (will the WFA owners ever address this problem - this is hampering the game and support for the league) - - yet officiating was not the reason for the loss even though it was inconsistent. There were a few injuries and lots of good plays by the offense and defense. Next week special teams will need to show its toughness and mental toughness in game and game management.
A rare touchdown by 15 year veteran Christie Sabatucci was recorded when she caught a touchdown pass early in the game.
So fans the weather Saturday next will be nice, sunny -- so take the short trip over to Indiana and watch the game! Great tailgating weather alert for week next.
First Game in Several Days (April 7, 2018)
The Comets have held try outs, have had winter practices and a scrimmage - - now this week is the time to put it all together and play that first game of the season.
30 women are ready to go and play and continue the Comets legacy. What is the future for this team, what will the record be at the end of the year?
Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Southfield Lathrup Field against the Detroit Dark Angels. The Dark Angels are a formidable team -- good numbers, strong size, big and quick running back to tear through the line, well coached and well practiced to date.
This will be a great first game to start off the season. The Comets are young but hungry? A quick start will be needed and the weather is predicted to be cold -- bring you hot cocoa to the game. See you at the game.

Original Comets Player Announces Retirement after 2018 Season
An original Columbus Comets (and Flames) player has announced her retirement following the end of the Comets 2018 season. She is the last of the original Comets (and was a Columbus Flame player) to end her tenure with the team.
Christie Sabatucci, a multiple position player in her years of playing womens professional football with the Comets has decided to leave her cleats in the middle of the field after the last Comet game in the 2018 season.
She is a 15 year veteran of the team and missed few games as a player.
"This has been a great journey and honor to have played with the Comets players, with the Coaches and against some great opponents in my 15 years", she said. "I leave knowing I have left it all out on the field for all the games, tried to be a leader on and off the field, and put the Comets in the best position to win our games", she continued.
Head Coach Hank Patterson noted : "Tuci is a great player and all the facets she brings to the team will be missed. We are grateful to have had her as long as we did and passing the torch is always hard. We wish her all the best and thank her for her years of playing, leadership and community service as a member of the Columbus Comets."

Comets Wide Receiver Garners Award for 2017 Play
Comets wide receiver DeeDee Talley was named a 2017 Burmy Award winner. This was given to recognize her as "Best Wide Receiver, WFA Division 2".
Head Coach Hank Patterson said of the award "she is truly deserving of being recognized as one of the best last season". Talley commented "this is an honor and I appreciate it as well as the work my position coach ([sic] M.D. Ferguson) did with me to push me in practice and games to improve my receiving skills".
Comets Coach An Answer to a Great Football Trivia Question
Comets assistant coach, M.D. Ferguson (an original coach with the team and a first female coach within the current era of womens professional football) is an answer to a great football trivia question. This may get you a free beverage of your choice in the future when you pose the question or are asked the question.
The trivia question is: "Who is the first female coach to have coached a game in an NFL football stadium"?
The answer is: Columbus Comets assistant coach, M.D. Ferguson was the first female to coach in an NFL stadium.
Facts: This game took place in the Cleveland Browns stadium on April 24, 2004. The opponent was the Cleveland Fusion. The Comets won the game, by the way, by a score of 20-7 (source: Columbus Comets Official Webpage: www. columbuscomets.org in the "about" section).
Great job Coach and keep up the excellent coaching and mentoring of the players and others in Central Ohio and beyond.

Comets Roster FYI
The Comets roster for the 2018 season has been updated. There will be many new faces on the team this year hoping to propel the team back in to the WFA championship game. Many veteran players choose to retire or not return after the 2017 season.
Comets Tryout FYI
The Comets have begun the 2018 season practice sessions for the indoor period. Interested in playing for the team and have not as yet tried out.
This may still be possible and potential players should contact the Head Coach Hank Patterson at hpatters@columbus.rr.com and also fill out the registration sheet on the official Comet website before you contact him.
Those players transferring from another team should also contact the Head Coach.
Some Early WFA League Division/Conference Info
The WFA website shows an early placement of teams by both Division (i.e. I, II, or III - - and those are determined by team roster size) and early placement in a division and region conference.
The WFA site also shows a group of new teams in the league many at D3 level.
As of this time here is what is shown for the Comets:
Division: 2
Conference: National Conference, Northeast Region
Of course both could change (for example the numbers of rostered players are more or fewer than current numbers so the team would go up to division 1 or fall down into division 3) or the region may change to align the team into the midwest division (geographically that makes the most sense but this is never the way the Comets are placed by the league).
Updates to follow as are initial reports from December camp that starts on December 2.
FYI: Comets Indoor Practice Dates Set: Are You Ready?
December will bring the start of the 2018 seasons indoor practice sessions. These sessions are held at Stars Indoor Sports, 6124 Busch Boulevard, Columbus, 43229 (telephone 614-985-3003).
The first date will be on Saturday, December 2, and players should report by 5:30 to prepare for the first practice whistle. The Comets official page has important information for attendees to read and review and should be consulted.
Good luck, come with an attitude to learn and play and join the quest for this to be the best season of the Comets yet.
Comets Tryout Camp Summary
The Comets tryout camp sessions have concluded. Many came to the tryout and those invited to the next phase for the 2018 season are ready to move on to the November mini-camp stage and hopefully to the January indoor practice sessions. (If you came to tryout and are confused about your status after trying out get in touch with the Head Coach, Hank Patterson, at hpatters@columbus.rr.com and ask for your status -- do not just assume you did not move onto the next phase for the 2018 season).
The tryout players have the makings of good players after going through the practices and some may push several veteran players for starting time or a move to a new position. And it is important that both incoming players and last season players continue to ready themselves for the mini-camp by running, stretching, lifting weights, working on the core, etc. Incoming players should get with her position coach about what to do if in doubt.
Next up in a mini camp in November. And if you still think you want to tryout or are one of those who signed up to attend and did not get in touch with the Head Coach for the possibility of tryout during the mini camp.
Former Comets Standout Joins the Coaching Staff
Head Coach Hank Patterson has announced a new coaching staff member for the 2018 season. "We are pleased to have former lineman Chelsea "C.J." Johnson will have responsibilities with the offensive and defensive line. She is the second female coach for the Comets joining long-time and original team coach M.D. Ferguson as a female coach.
"I am excited to get under way with this new opportunity with the Comets", Johnson stated.

Specific drills for potential positions (this does not mean that is the position or position group you will eventually play).
If you are someone who has long snapped in the past bring that to the attention of the Special Teams coach (M.D. Ferguson) when you arrive.
If you have skills punting bring that to the attention of the Special Teams coach (M.D. Ferguson) when you arrive. Note -- if you have never punted do not state "I cannot punt but will try and/or learn". However if you are a former soccer player or rugby player let her know and you may be asked to punt since those two sports have transferable skills.
If you have skills as a kicker (kick-off , PAT, or field goal) bring that to the attention of the Special Teams coach (M.D. Ferguson) when you arrive. Note -- if you have never kicked do not state "I cannot punt but will try and/or learn". However if you are a former soccer player or rugby player let her know and you may be asked to punt since those two sports have transferable skills.
So if you have a question who do you call (GHOSTBUSTERS)
Call the general manager Lorain Harris at 740-503-3389 and she will answer your questions and take down any information.
What else do I need to maybe know or think about:
And it is time to start stretching, working on your core muscles, running sprints, and doing some push-ups to get ready.
Here is some more information to read:
1. Playing on the Comets has a large time commitment for practices and games. A). The majority of the practices are in the evenings, (from January until August 2018); B). games are on Saturdays (so block out all Saturdays from the middle of March until the middle of August), C). Friday night walk through practices during the season, and D). in season practices of twice a week and usually that during the period of January to the start of the season.
THAT SAID NOTE THIS: If you have a job that is on a Saturday it is not likely that you can play for the Comets. We practice and play on Saturdays as well as practice during the evenings on another night. And if you are a second (and some third shift) employee it may be hard to commit and play due to practice and game times.
2. There is a cost so start saving. Helmets (which are an important piece of gear to have to save your head) vary in costs but a good one can run over $100.00 dollars (consult the Riddell website or Rawlings Football Equipment website for adult or varsity (Riddell) helmets to get a cost sense. Shoulder pads can also run $100 or more dollars (again check the Rawlings website for some costs. (You should probably hold off on buying helmets or shoulder pads until you have a sense of what position(s) you would be playing).
3. There are other costs and those are shared in the first practice or pre-season meeting (you can always ask the general manager for what an idea of costs will be). It is safe to state that you should start saving money now for the season -- a few hundred dollars at best.
4. Yes it is important to be at every practice and game.
5. Commit to the entire season and all the work involved. Actually that should be starting now to get limber, do push-ups, work your core and legs, and start both sprint work to build endurance. Playing womens football, at this stage of the evolution of the game, means that it is a larger commitment to being in shape physically and mentally.
6. Be coachable, team player and in full communication with the head coach (not necessary to share all on the team facebook page just call the head coach).
7. These are tryouts and if you are good enough believe in yourself. Any rookie can oust a veteran player from her starting position with hustle, attitude, learning the playbook, coming to practice and practicing 110%, do not "listen" to anyone who says "I am the starter at position (name here)" -- that position can be yours to start.
8. With that stated you may not have alot of playing time in year one, and you may practice all season without seeing much field time. That is part of being on a team and does not diminish your importance as a member of the team.
9. If you absolutely cannot make these tryout dates and still think you want to play on the Comets it is suggested that you email the Head Coach Hank Patterson. You may be able to tryout at that time -- just email and ask: hpatters@columbus.rr.com. In past seasons some of those trying out at that time were able to land a roster spot.
Here are some handy tryout camp tips developed over the years:
Tryout tip number 1: It does not matter if you have played football or flag football to tryout and make the team. Do you have athletic skills from a sport or working out? Are you a former soccer player who wants to kick-off, take the PAT try? Are you a rugger who is looking to put those skills to work? Did you play collegiate sports and now are looking for a new athletic outlet? Did you go to the Urban Meyer 2017 Womens Football Clinic and want to get in the game for real? Or just someone who never was able to play organized football. Those are the combinations of individuals who come and attend tryouts.
Tryout tip number 2: Did you tryout in the years past and "not make it"? Get back to the tryout and go again. You should have learned from the first tryout so go back and get it done this time.
Tryout tip number 3: Come prepared mentally and physically. Start some stretching now, bring hydration, bring some cleats (if you do not have any come with your sneakers). Be prepared to work hard, repeat the drills twice in short order, lead yourself to the best and not act like you do not want to play. Rain does not cancel a tryout (neither will cold(er) weather or snow!).
Tryout tip number 4: Don't tryout if you are not ready to commit to the multiple practice sessions/times of practice, cost of the team/game dates on Saturdays from mid-April to early August, small hurts and new sore muscles. Mini camp and tryouts are not in full pad uniforms and helmets. Everyone looks great and all-pro in tryout camp -- it is when the January practice time hits that those who make the January camp teams sessions drop out because it is more intense, they came in underprepared or thinking they had made the team and the time demands hit. If you work at night or on weekends that is when practice is and games are - - factor that in as you attend the tryout camp sessions.
Tryout tip number 5: If you miss the first tryout date come to the next. Communicate with the head coach and your position coach about potential conflicts at the tryouts.
Tryouts are a multi-Saturday series of drills, running, showing strength and agility. One thing that separates those who make the team to those that don't is showing heart, drive, willingness to learn and be coached, and some "nastyness" to be a player.
Don't shy back -- leave it all on the tryout field each period of the tryout process. And here are some final points and general information that is looked for in players (hey though do not be intimidated if you cannot do this -- these are good coaches who take time to develop the potential in you -- the key is to tryout, get on the team and keep working hard):
All tryout attendees will be evaluated upon their ability to perform at a high level in the following areas: speed, power, agility, and strength, as well as their performance in football drills that each player will participate in. The players will perform football drills within the following areas:
Quarterbacks: arm strength, accuracy, drop backs and play action passing
Running Backs: ball handling, cutting and pass receiving
Wide Receivers: release vs. press coverage, route running and catching
Tight Ends: route running and catching and blocking techniques
Offensive Line: run blocking and pass blocking techniques
Defensive line: run reactions and pass rush techniques
Linebackers: run reactions and pass coverages
Secondary: all phases of pass coverages, man to man along with zone
Kickers/Punters: accuracy, distance, hang time and consistency (strikers in soccer are usually good kickers)
OTHER CAMP INFORMATION
Testing: Physical testing may consist of pro agility, L drill, 10, 20 and 40 yd runs (twice in short order), and bench press, push ups or other strength drill.
Comet Players Visit Nationwide Childrens Hospital
Recently several Columbus Comets players took part in a great community service. The players took time to visit the children hospitalized at Nationwide Childrens Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Overall the players collectively thought that "this is a great way to payback to the community and visit with some really brave children who are patients at Children's. One continued, "I am proud to have been asked to go and spend time with these kids, it made a lasting impact and I cannot wait to go back again."
The team was invited by the hospital's Family and Volunteer Service Department to visit with the patients. The Comets are one of many professional sports teams in Columbus to visit with patients.
Photos of the visit most likely can be seen on the official Comets webpage and/or the Comets Facebook page.

Without a Win the Comets did miss the 2017 playoffs
The June 3 loss to Pittsburgh the Comets missed the 2017 playoffs. This is a rare occurrence for the team and ended the season on a disappointing note.
"We did not perform to the calibre of play that we can as a team. There were lapses in play, in coaching, in work ethic. These will need to be addressed for the 2018 season," said Head Coach Hank Patterson.
"We may be losing some veterans and their leadership, and will have to rely on the Ohio athletes to step up and join the team for the 2018 season", he continued.
Hey WFA Here is a 2018 Season Regional Team Idea:
The brackets in two leagues are not balanced. So here is an idea thought up in the fan stands (in no particular order)
1) The Midwest Region should have Columbus Comets, Detroit Dark Angels, and Indy Crash moved into the region
or
2) The Southeast Region should have the Columbus Comets moved into the region.
Why can this be good for the league: new rivalries, competitive balance, more exposure for the league with the new team mix, balance among the numbers of teams in the region.
We will be waiting for your answer.
Stats updated Part 1
The Comets overall win and loss record has been updated on this page. The stats are found further along as the page is scanned.
Head Coach Hank Patterson is nine games from winning 100 games in professional womens football.
Stats updated Part 2
The stats for the season are totalled. In all the Comets in the 2017 season saw an increase in offensive points scored and minimized the points scored against. These both are positives from the 2016 season.
Overall, the total points scored this season was 227 averaging 28.4 ppg.
Overall the defense allowed 108 total points to be scored on the Comets with a 13.5 ppg average.
Without a Win in the Final Game will the Comets make the Playoffs?
The June 3 home game against the Pittsburgh Passion was the final regular season game for the 2017 season. The Comets needed a victory to seal a leap in the playoff rankings and get into the playoffs.
The team fell short of the goal for a victory losing by a final score of 17-3. If "moral victories" count this is a game that the Comets should have had outside of a called back touchdown (a momentum killer), lost points on special teams, and sputtering offense and defensive series. In the end the Passion probably were glad to leave Columbus with a win.
That leaves the Comets in a wait and see playoff situation. Above the Comets in the most recent rankings were Montreal (won their game over New York by 27 points that should help the Comets but in this league -- that may or may not help); Philadelphia (lost to Boston by 3). The Comets have not always been treated right by the various league big wigs so it may well be that they are the odd team out.
This is despite the fact that the Comets, Philadelphia, New York each sit at 4-4 records. Philly has scored the most offensive points, and the Comets have allowed the least defensive points. The playoff rankings and decision will be one that is discussed in many forums and the Comets have to take a wait and see position.
Well this is it - - - week June 3 game
The June 3 home game against the Pittsburgh Passion is the final regular season game for the 2017 season.
Will the Comets put it all together and win the game to solidify a playoff spot?
Currently the team appears out of the 2017 playoff scenarios. There are a few things that can happen depending which divisional teams win, lose, tie lose in this series of final week games.
Rest assured the Comets are practicing like it is the WFA championship game, getting injuries healed and waiting to finish the season on a strong note.
The final game is at Huffaker Sports Complex, Grove City Christian High School. The kick-off is at 8:00 p.m. for this game.
Comets Bye Week: FYI
While the league play continues on Saturday, May 27, the Comets have a bye week. This is an important time for them to prepare to play the final game of the season.
The final game is a home game against a Division I opponent -- Pittsburgh Passion. Game date is June 3, 2017 with a kick-off time at 8:00 p.m. (Note that is one hour later than normal due an event on the field prior to the Comets game).
"We are working to get ready for the Pittsburgh game, trying to heal some players, and be more mentally tough in the final game," said Head Coach Hank Patterson.

Comets One Game to Go for Playoff Run
The Comets are coming off a win on May 21 against Toledo. The next game is a home game on June 3 against Pittsburgh Passion. The scenario is coming down to win the game and make the playoffs. Practices continue in the upcoming bye week (May 27) and the game planning will be fierce to put the team in the best position to win.
The Comets are ranked number 4. Hey WFA that is a mystery when you look at the offensive and defensive stats. The Comets have scored 224 points (tied with Philly and more than Montreal) and held teams to a total of 91 (second to Montreal).
It may be a trip to Montreal for the playoffs. Passports ready??
Comets Defeat Toledo: Keeping Playoff Hopes Alive
(Insert your favorite smiley face here)
Comets defeat Toledo by a score of 35-6. The team is mow 4-3 for the season.
Comets Defeated by Cleveland: May 13, 2017
The Comets game winning momentum was short lived at two games with a pounding defeat on Saturday, May 13, 2017 against the Cleveland Fusion -- in front of the largest crowd of the season. The final score was 30-10.
It took four plays for Cleveland to put a score on the board due to a poor special teams punt performance (uncharacteristic at best) that led to the scoring explosion by the Fusion.
The Comets continue offensive woes, inconsitencies in play on all three team groups (offense, defense, special teams) despite having a talented roster that has not put it all together in one game.
The team travels this Saturday to Toledo to take on a Toledo Reign team having success to date in 2017. Playoff implications continue to be big in each game for the Comets. And this is a must win for the 3-3 Comets team and coaching staff.
Comets win, Comets win, Comets win (ode to Harry Carey)
Comets defeat West Michigan with a second straight shut-out. The final score was 46-0. This sets up a big time playoff implication game against Cleveland weekend next. This is a home game on May 13.
"This was a good game, we continue to have small things to improve upon", said Head Coach Hank Patterson. "This next game is a big challenge for the team, players and coaching staff and we need to be consistent and work hard this week in practice," he continued.
Comets Looking to Continue Raising the "W" This Weekend (Nod to the CUBBIES!)
With the Comets taking a road trip this weekend to Kalamazoo, Michigan to face off against the West Michigan Mayhem perhaps it will be the start of a winning streak. (Note to fans going to the game, there is a 6:00 p.m. Michigan time kick-off -- so plan your travel plans and time accordingly).
Here are a few things to wonder about this game:
Can the Comets offense really get going and have some sustained drives -- that would help the defense stay fresh.
Can the defense continue to build on the dominance that has been shown at times in the games?
Can another safety be gotten to reach a tie with four NFL teams?
Will the special team units continue to grow and solidify in the roles and attitude of play in each special team opportunity?
Will the Comets not look past this game to the big game the following Saturday and play all four quarters.
The Mayhem always give the Comets a great game and the Comets need to win this game for playoff hopes and needs.
Comets Back on the "W" Side of the Game
With the Comets at home on April 29 against the Indy Crash, there was alot of activity on all three teams. In the end the Comets came out with a victory by a score of 46-0. This pulls the team to .500 record.
The Comets travel to Kalamazoo on May 6. If you are traveling to the game, the game is on CST and not EST so leave at least one hour earlier.
Four Columbus West High School Students Recipients of McDade Scholarship
Prior to the Ap ril 29, 2017 game four Columbus City School District students who attend or recently graduated from West High School were the recipients of the inaugural Darrell McDade Scholarship. Each student was awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship for use at his/her respective post-secondary education school.
Comets Defense Records Third Safety of the 2017 Season
With the Comets defense recording an early game safety against Cleveland the team is the league leader in this category. The National Football Team record (source: nfl.com) is four in one season by several teams (Cleveland, 1927; Detroit, 1967; San Francisco, 1996; and Tennessee, 1999).
There are more chances to reach the number four and five and own the record outright at the professional football level.
Comets' Miscues Lead to Road Defeat
With the Comets record at 1-1 the Comets traveled to Cleveland to Cleveland on April 22, 2017. At the end of the game the Comets came away with a loss. This drops the season record to 1-2.
While there were many good plays, the theme of the night were miscues, penalties at key moments and drive enders. "We need to continue to work on all facets of our game in the coming week of practice," said Hank Patterson, Head Coach. He added, "Indy is a great team and they are coming to play a tough game on the 29th".
Several interceptions occurred and the defense again tallied a safety.
The final score was 19-9. The next game is Saturday, April 29, at Huffaker Sports Complex.
Comets' Head Coach Named to Lead Area High School Football Team
While the Comets season continues a major announcement in the Columbus, Ohio area football world was made during the last week.
Comets Head Coach Hank Patterson was named Head Coach of the Grove City Christian School Football Team. In addition to being the High School Varsity Coach, he will oversee the remainder of the program from junior varsity to grade school levels.
The announcement was made by Grove City Christian's Athletic Director, Matt Blandin. "Coach Patterson is known for his innovative offenses and is often referenced by his coaching peers and local media as the "quarterback whisperer" due to his development of many athletes at the quarterback position over his coaching career...despite all of his acomplishments and stats throughout his career, he is known for his desire to mentor young men both on and off the field."
Congratulations to Coach Patterson. More can be found at the This Week in the News website: http://www.thisweeknews.com/sports/20170421/football-patterson-taking-over-at-grove-city-christian
Comets On the Road to Cleveland
With the Comets record at 1-1 the April 23, game is a huge game for the team. The Comets travel up I-71 North to Maple Heights to take on rival Cleveland Fusion. The Fusion has brought the hammer and taken the last couple of games from the Comets. The Fusion come off a loss last week to Pittsburgh while the Comets were idle in a bye week.
It will be necessary for the Comets to play all three parts of the game well, keep healthy and contain the Fusion offense in order to move to 2-1.
Comets return home on April 29 until then the fandome should take the I-71 corridor up and cheer on the team.
Did You Know this Comet Fact?? - - Part II

The Comets Assistant Coach - - M.D. Ferguson is the first female high school football coach in the State of Ohio.
She is an assistant coach with the Columbus City League's Linden McKinley Stem High School (the Panthers). Her coaching roles entail junior varsity defensive head coach; varsity special teams, tight ends and cornerbacks coach. In 2001, under Head Coach James Jones, she worked with the junior varsity football team.
Further, she is an original coach with the Comets and prior to the Comets was an orignal coach with the Columbus Flames. That makes her one of the earliest professional football female coaches. Columbus Comets Begin FANTASTIC FIVE DRIVE Continues:

The Columbus Comets have received the final version of the 2017 WFA season schedule. Included are some long time rivals who should bring great games for both teams. This website has the 2017 season schedule loaded. The first game is away against the Pittsburgh Passion.
Check out the schedule and give a season prediction or comment on the Comets Facebook page or Twitter page (or both!).
Columbus Comets 2017 January Update:
1. The Columbus Comets continue to have the schedule worked on by the WFA league office. To date the first three games are away games with the first game of the season at a great rival Pittsburgh Passion.
2. Indoor practices resume on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 4:45 p.m. A shout-out to all the past Comets players who have come by and stopped in the practices. Come by one of the practices and join us post-practice in the upstairs cafe to hear about the goals, meet coaches and players and visit.
3. The tempo of practices should really pick-up in January and the team should start to mesh as a unit.
Columbus Comets 2017 Game Schedule Update:
The Columbus Comets have received the WFA schedule for 2017. As always -- it will probably be tweaked by the league so do not expect any solid information as yet. However the schedule did look challenging with a season start multi-game road trip sessions. The schedule has both rivals and new teams for Comets opponents. "Comet players will really need to work to get ready for the upcoming schedule to reach the championship game," said Head Coach Hank Patterson. "We are in the midst of our 2017 indoor practice season and working hard for the Comets and to represent the City of Columbus", he added.
Once the schedule is "final" it will be on this website. But get your travel gear ready for the first month of the season -- April 2017.

"We had a successful mini-camp with alot of invigorating and good looking first year players", said Head Coach Hank Patterson. He continued by saying "everyone is looking forward to getting onto the next portion of our 2017 season preparations."
The indoor camp will start on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 3:45 p.m. with both returning and new players in attendance for a team meeting, chalk session and practice.
So if you are a first year player come prepared: helmets, shoulder pads, a royal blue, black or white outer shirt, shoes for indoor training, mouthpiece and a gallon of water and coachability and attitude. Gear is available via many website sources: Riddell, Rawlings, Football America, etc.
If you want to attempt to play for the Comets you should plan on coming to the December 3 session for a tryout. Contact Head Coach Hank Patterson hpatters@columbus.rr.com and also go to the official Comets web page and complete the registration session. By league rule players must be 18 at the start of the season. No football experience is needed and Comets coaches are recongized by the WFA league and players as one of the best teaching staffs and coaching staffs.
Good luck in the next phase of the 2017 season.

Columbus Comets Coaches Lead National Team to 2016 All-American Game Win
The Columbus Comets coaching staff as well as many Comet players took charge in the July 23 All-American game and led the National team to a win. The final score against the American team was 56-19 (and it could have been much higher). This is the third time the Comets staff have led the National team and currently are 3-0 in these games. Head Coach Hank Patterson said after the game, "Our coaching staff came out to win, we implemented a great game plan, and the players executed well. There are many great players out on the field today."

Congratulations to all the Columbus Comets coaches for this honor. Good luck in the game.
The Comets 2016 season ends
The Comets took a road trip to Philadelphia for a second round playoff game. The team sputtered and lost in the second round of the playoffs. There were spurts of great plays but not enough at time to continue to put together drives. This loss to the Philadephia Phantomz ends the 2016 season.
Read below if you are looking to tryout for the 2017 team.

Comets Take a Day and Enjoy the Pride Parade in Columbus
With an off-game week the Comets were able to take part in the 2016 Columbus Pride Parade. The float was as awesome as the weather (finally not a rainy day for the parade). The Comets heard alot of support and cheers for the team and its season.
So Happy Pride Day to our LBGTQ community.
WFA Championship Quest Continues:
The Comets defeated the Indy Crash on Saturday, June 11, 2016. In a game played in Indianapolis the Comets were well balanced and took home a victory. The final score was 26-6.
This moves the Comets into the next playoff round on Saturday, June 25, 2016. This game will take place in Philadelphia against the Philadelphis Phantomz. The winner of this game will move on to the WFA Division II Championship game.
The weather will be great so make the trip.

WFA Playoffs Begin: Comets Are in Round One:
The Comets move onto the playoffs with an away game on Saturday, June 11, 2016.
The game will take place against the Indy Crash in Indianapolis.
Kick-off is 7:00 p.m.
Game location is: Roncalli High School Stadium. The address is 3300 Prague Road, Indianapolis, IN 46227.
The winner of this contest moves on to face the Philadelphia team.
Comets Go to 4-3 Record after May 21 Victory:
The West Michigan Mayhem came to Columbus on Saturday, May 21, 2016 for a Division II game. The Comets offense fired up, the defense played well and the special teams came into form. In the end the victory went to the Comets with a 35-0 score. This moves the Comets to 4-3 on the season.
The largest game of the year looms in the final game on Saturday, June 4 at Cleveland against the Fusion. (May 28, 2016 is a bye week for the Comets). The Fusion have frustrated the Comets in recent years and taken away the wins. In a game with playoff implications and division implications the next game is a must win for the Comets.
The Comets are sure to move up in the WFA Division II rankings with this latest victory, most likely between the six and nine seed.
Plan your trip to Cleveland and watch the Comets close out the regular season.
Enjoying this page?
If you are enjoying this page go to the Comets twitter (@ColumbusComets) and the facebook page and give a shout out on the number one unofficial website for the Columbus Comets. Best shout out takes home a small prize of a Comets tee-shirt or hat or maybe gym shorts or a free lunch (sorry no free lunch but a hot dog and soda at the next home game [playoffs??).
And while on facebook check out the Columbus Comets Booster Fan Club page (not affiliated with this website).
Comets Win Streak Ends:
The inconsistent play of the Comets continued in the recent game against rival Cleveland Fusion. The final score was 27-8 and moves the Comets to 3-3 for the season.
The Comets try to get back on the playoff track with the next game on Saturday, May 21. This is a home game versus West Michigan. This game has big playoff implications for both teams.
Practices should be spirited as the players and coaching staff work on the bugs that are stopping the consistent offensve, defensive and special team play that has been successful in the past. There is one more chance for the Comets to defeat the Fusion in the final game of the regular season. That will be an away match in Cleveland.
Comets Win Streak at One (and counting):
After a loss in Chicago the Comets went on the road to Toledo and took on the Toledo Reign. The final score at the end of the game was 17-0. This places the Comets at 3-2 for the season.
This week the team returns to the friendly confines of Huffaker Community Stadium. The 7:00 p.m. kikc-off on May 14 game is against long-time rival Cleveland Fusion. "This is always a dog-fight game", said Hank Patterson, Head Coach. "We have to smoth aout alot of errors in the previous contests and continue to try to play four quarters", he continued.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate and the weather is predicted to be the best of the season.
Comets Going on Second Road Game in Two Weeks:
After a loss in Chicago the Comets will be on the road for the second week in a row. Saturday, May 7 finds the Comets in Toledo facing the Toledo Reign. Both teams face a must win game situation and the Comets need to re-group after last week's loss. The team returns home with a game against rival Cleveland Fusion on May 14.
Comets Going on a Bus Ride for Game 4 - - Chicago
The Comets will be on the bus this Saturday for a game in Chicago against the Chicago Force. This will be the third meeting between the teams. The Force own a 2-0 advantage in the series with all games being played in Chicago (not sure why they do not travel here -- another WFA management item to think on).
Game time is 5:00 p.m. (Chicago time) at Lane Technical High School -- corner of Addison and Western Avenues -- the Cubs play a 2:20 home game that date [travel fyi]). "We are looking forward to this game and playing the Force", said Hank Patterson, Head Coach.
Comets Find Difficulty in Getting a Game for week 3:
The Comets will not be playing in Flint this weekend. Evidently, that team is decimated by injuries and the roster is short. So do not pass go and travel to see us play in Flint. The team will be the recipient of a forfeit win and the points. However, they would rather have had a game -- Comets and families pay money and lose job time to go on Saturdays and that cannot be recouped by any other job hours or bus company money paid out of pocket.
It is doubtful that the WFA owners really care that the Comets lost a game in this process. Their league placement is poor and the teams need to be reviewed. Their voices are silent in this matter on the WFA website. Comets have a long and proud playing tradition and deserve better treatment by the WFA. There is a league forfeit fee attached but it is doubted that the Comets will ever see those funds
Comets Find Difficulty in Game with Passion:
The Comets took on a rival Pittsburgh Passion team on Saturday, April 9, 2016. It was a tough game that began with a 60 plus run by the Passion. The Comets responded with a field goal for a 7-3 score.
The field goal would be the last score for the Comets for the game. Red zone difficulties were huge and the Comets could not punch in the ball for more scores.
The final score was 48-3. This moves the Comets to 1-1 for the season. The Comets return to action with an away game against Flint Riveters on Saturday, April 23, 2016.
"The season is young and we have to get back to executing in all phases of the game," said Hank Patterson, Head Coach. "We will fine tune our areas of need in practice and be ready for Flint and returning to Columbus with a win," he continued.
Comets Early Score Stats:
The Comets have scored 41 points in the two games played in the 2016 season. The team has given up 54 points to opposing teams.
Comets Find Win 1 in Game 1:
The Comets took on tough weather conditions and a tough team in the season opener on Saturday, April 2, 2016. At the end of the contest the Comets came out with a 38-6 win over the Keystone Assault. Next up for the Comets is the Pittsburgh Passion -- always a great rivalry game. "This next game will be a great game," said Hank Patterson, Head Coach. "We always look forward to our games with Pittsburgh", he continued.
The game will be a home game for the Comets and kick-off time is 7:00 p.m.
Comets Scrimmage Date Update:
The Comets went to Garden City, Michigan on Saturday, March 19 and had a scrimmage with the Detroit Dark Angels. "We saw alot of players and the scrimmage went as anticipated", said Head Coach Hank Patterson. "We still have alot of prep work to be done and look forward to the season starting", he added.
Comets Roster Updated - - April 2, 2016
The 2016 roster for players has been updated. This is who we are marching into the season with. Players who have come and tried out but not committed or not communicated with the head coach have been de-activated.
Still think you can play????? At times the Comets have added players. Get in touch with the Head Coach and find out when the next practice is. Missed alot of stuff after trying out and still want to play -- get in touch with the Head Coach and see what could be done. There is only one 2016 season so if you want in on the Comets you had better get on board soon. There may be a possibility to still tryout for the team. Contact the Head Coach - Hank Patterson - at hpatters@columbus.rr.com if interested.
Tryouts for the 2017 season will be starting in either late September or early October 2016. Watch this page for more details.
Comet Site Visitors:
The Women's Football Alliance has placed the Comets into the NFC NE Region -- Central North Division. Other division teams include: Toledo Reign, Cleveland Fusion, Pittsburgh Passion. Should be some great games this year.

Comets Add a General Manager
Lorrain Harris, recently retired as a player after the 2015 season has been named the General Manager for the Comets by CEO Hank Patterson. In her role she will take the lead on sponsorships, game travel (i.e. hotels and busses for the team), game management, and other responsibilities. Look for Lorrain on the sidelines and at practices. Her email is rain9600@hotmail.com if you want to ask a question or become a sponsor or have a group ticket request.
2016 Tryout Camp Concludes Part 1 (of 2)
The Columbus Comets' fall 2015 tryout camp sessions for the Columbus Comets' 2016 have concluded. However, if you are an individual who has just found out about the team, opportunities to play or are transferring from another team you should get in contact with the Head Coach. This is because in the past when the team begins indoor season practices limited tryouts have been granted. So unless you inform the coach of your "wanting a shot" you will not get one. Here is what you need to do:
Email your name/phone number/email address/ any prior athletic experience/height and weight to:
hpatters@columbus.rr.com
Let coach know your name, email address, telephone contact, height/weight, any past football experience (flag or contact); any past athletic experience, maybe the position you think you can play, If you are a past soccer player were you a striker or another position that could possibly add to our kicking game? And any other experience or information you want to share.
2016 Tryout Camp Concludes Part 2 (of 2)
So you went to the tryout camp and have been invited to come to the indoor practice season and sessions. Now what???
1. Work on increasing your knowledge of the football position -- by talking to your position coach; by watching games on television, by reading or watching videos of your position(s).
2. Continue to get mentally strong. Being involved in tryout camp is one thing -- the next sessions are hard and physical in nature. Your body will hurt and your mental toughness can be tested. Things and information move more rapidly.
3. Continue to get more physically strong, limber in your core and quads/hamstrings etc. You will need to be able to go full go for longer periods of time in terms of aerobic capacity.
4. Clear your schedule. It is expected that you make each team meeting, practice, workout session, game from the start of indoor practice until August 2016. Yes, this includes time that you may have spent in the past with family members, boating, weekend trips, Pride Weekend events, Comfest etc.
5. Get your equipment and other gear ready. Wear the helmet, shoulder pads and mouthpiece and get used to it.
6. Be ready to go at the indoor practice 30 minutes before the start of the practice. Getting there at the start time is late time with the Comets.
7. Cannot make a practice? Direct this information to the head coach only not the entire team. DO not hit the reply button to all and send that information out.
8. Watch your facebook and other social media pages. As a player you represent the Comets so represent them with professionalism and caution in what you post.
2015: Thanks to the retiring players:
As the Columbus Comets season closed so did the football careers of four players.
Original Columbus Flame and Columbus Comet Dee Sherwin (Number 1) retired. (Number 1 may now be a retired number).
Lorrain Harris (OL/58)
Stephanie Stevens (RB/ST 37)
Jo Gardner (LB/St 44)
Best of luck to these players as they enter the next phase of their athletic career and non-football life.
2016 Tryout Camp Quick Information:
As the Columbus Comets official page is "under construction" and to answer some e-mail questions received by interested women who want to attend the 2016 season tryout camp here are some short answers:
1. If you have interest in the fall tryout camp and possibley moving into the spring practices the best option at this moment is to e-mail the head coach, Hank Patterson (hpatters@columus.rr.com) your name, mobile number, email address, any past playing experience with sports, and other information.
2. In the past it has no cost for the tryout camp and that will probably continue.
3. Playing on the Comets has a large time commitment for practices and games. The majority of the practices are in the evening, games are on Saturdays (so block out all Saturdays from the middle of March until the middle of August), Friday night walk through practices during the season, and in season practices of twice a week and usually that during the period of January to the start of the season.
4. Yes it is important to be at every practice and game. If you have a job that requires you to work during practice and/or games that impacts things.
5. Commit to the entire season and all the work involved. Actually that should be starting now to get limber, do push-ups, work your core and legs, and start both sprint work to build endurance. Playing womens football, at this stage of the evolution of the game, means that it is a larger commitment to being in shape physically and mentally.
The 2016 TRYOUT INFORMATION (this page will be kept open even though the tryout camp has concluded)
Watch this page for more information.
For those of you who have emailed after attending the Ohio State 2015 Urban Meyer Womens Football Camp -- the answer to your question is: yes, you can play football in a competitive league. Attending the Comets tryouts will take your dream of playing football into reality. Below is the information that you have asked for about trying out for the Comets. You do not have to limit yourself to a "camp" at OSU for your football dream.
If you were not able to make the 2015 season tryout camp and still think you want to play on the Comets it is suggested that you email the Head Coach Hank Patterson. You may be able to tryout at that time -- just email and ask: hpatters@columbus.rr.com. In past seasons some of those trying out at that time were able to land a roster spot.
This site will keep up the tips for tryout camp attendees:
Tryout tip number 1: It does not matter if you have played football or flag football to tryout and make the team. Do you have athletic skills from a sport or working out? Are you a former soccer player who wants to kick-off, take the PAT try? Are you a rugger who is looking to put those skills to work? Did you play collegiate sports and now are looking for a new athletic outlet? Did you go to the Urban Meyer Womens Football Clinic and want to get in the game for real?
Questions on the process can also be addressed to the Head Coach Hank Patterson (hpatters@columbus.rr.com).

Our Hearts Hurt (Remembering Coach Darrell McDade)
June 1, 2015
The hearts of the Comets players, coaching staff and fan base are hurting today. During the afternoon today Darrell McDade passed away from cancer. He leaves behind a wife and family.
Coach McDade had been with the Comets for many years. He not only coached the running backs but coached the offensive line early in his coaching years. He was "a good tactical coach, emphasizing the fundamentals and a player's coach", said Head Coach Hank Patterson.
Coach McDade was a graduate of Columbus State Community College with an Associates in Arts degree. Further, he graduated from Ohio Dominican University with a B.A., Sports Management.
He was employed by the Columbus City School District (CCS). During the 2014-2015 school year he worked at his alma mater -- West High School. In his CCS tenure he coached many sports and mentored and positively impacted numerous players. His most recent coaching position was in winter 2014-2015 at West High School. He served as the coach for the Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team.
Coach was a veteran, having fought in Desert Storm in the United States Marine Corps. He received commendations for his service and was proud to have served.
The Comets football season will continue with hurting hearts and the memories and teachings of Coach McDade fresh in our souls. Our lives are richer for knowing him and having spent time with him.
Coach McDade this web post is "broken down" with a traditional Irish prayer entitled "Remembered Joy":
Remembered Joy
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all...
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life’s been full, I’ve savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief—
Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
# 29 Columbus Flames/Columbus Comets: Chrissy Fowler
Prior to the home opener the Comets held a moment of silence in honor of a former player Chrissy Fowler. The Comets received word of her death earlier in the week prior to the game. No funeral or service arrangements are known at this time.
Fowler was an original player with both the Columbus Flames and Columbus Comets.
During the 2002-2003 season she was one of the team captains and helped lead the team team to a second-place league finish in the Flames inaugural season. She was also an Eastern Division All-Star in the Womens National Football Alliance League (NWFA) at both wide receiver and special teams. "She was a special player for our team and in the league", Head Coach Hank Patterson remembered. He added "she was one of the best in leadership and in her skills."
Many former players and coaches were in attendance at her recent celebration of her life event held on July 11, 2015 at the OSU Softball Field. Condolences can be sent to her mom: emeraldcoastraf@gmail.com.
Some General Information:

Comets football has been a mainstay in womens football since 2003. In 2009 the team finished the regular season 8-0 and was the Women's Football Alliance League Mid-Atlantic Champions. In 2010 the team finished the regular season undefeated. It appeared in the Womens Football Alliance Championship game, losing to the Lone Star Mustangs (16-12) and finished 11-1.
Coach Patterson and his staff have three times been named to coach the Women's National All-Star team in the WFA All-Star game (2011, 2012 and 2016). In all years the National team soundly defeated the opposing team. Coach Patterson had one team member (Tight End Kim Klesse) on the 2013 USA Womens Football team which played and won the championship in Finland.
The CEO/head coach is Hank Patterson (hpatters@columbus.rr.com or (614) 284-3652).
