Why The Falcon Nests in Lincoln County

The Falcon is a powerful and graceful bird. Its wing beats are deep and strong, and it maneuvers with ease and grace. Falcons can attain velocities of nearly 200 kilometers per hour in dives (stoops) on their prey. They are courageous. They will attack and kill prey more than twice their size. The next and young are fiercely defended against invaders. Falcons have keen eyesight. They can discern small objects eight times more easily than humans. They possess a noble tradition. In days of medieval hawking, the Falcon was so highly prized that only kings and emperors could possess one.

Naturalist and author G.H. Thayer summed up the Falcon's qualifications when he wrote "combining in a marvelous degree war-like strength-claiming the atmosphere here as its domain, then fearing neither beast that walk nor bird that flies, it is the very embodiment of noble rapacity and lonely freedom."

Of course, it's easy to see many parallels between the Falcon and Lincoln County High School's athletic teams, but there is more to the story of why the Falcon was chosen to represent us and why Red, White, and Blue were chosen as the school colors.

When the county decided to consolidate high schools in the mid-seventies, it was agreed that the symbols used to represent the new high school would be made up of symbols from each of the four county high schools that were being closed. Because red was one of the colors of Fayetteville Central High School, it was chosen. Blue was chosen for the same reason and represented Flintville High School, and white was chosen because it was one of Blanche High School's colors. That left only Boonshill High School. Since their mascot was an eagle, it was decided that the new school would use a bird as its mascot in honor of Boonshill. The Falcon was chosen.

Contrary to popular belief, there was a particular species chosen to represent Lincoln County High School. The Peregrine Falcon is native to this part of the country, so it was fitting to choose this particular species to stand for the new school.

There you have it...how we decided to be the Red, White, and Blue Falcons of Lincoln County High School.
