Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

 
Meeting Date, Time and Location - Thursday, October 19, 2023 – Biba’s Restaurant – 6:30pm
 

In Attendance – Mike Alexander, President; Tommy Wiggins, Vice President; Chris Bolden, Secretary Elect; Ron Petre, American League Commissioner; Rick Rhodes, National League Commissioner; Harvey Schulman, AL Member at Large; Eurskine Lyons, NL Member at Large; Christine Scheurich, Treasurer; Doris Warpole, Past League Secretary; David Burge, League Umpire; Todd Eaton, American League Commissioner Elect & League Web Master.
 
Mike called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.

 

  • Topic # 1: Nomination / Election of Officers for 2024
    • Discussion – Mike appointed Chris Bolden as League Secretary. Discussion about the eligibility of Board Members being able to manage a team in the league. This requirement was removed last year.
      • Mike Alexander nominated Jim Hannah for National League Commissioner for 2024. The Board votedand re-elected Rick Rhodes as National League Commissioner for 2024.
         
  • Topic # 2: League Commissioners – Nominated by Board
    • Discussion – Ron Petre announced that he is stepping down as American League Commissioner. Mike nominated Todd Eaton as American League Commissioner for 2024.
    • Remove term limits for league commissioners suggested by Ron Petre.
    • Resolution - League Commissioners are nominated by the President and voted on by the board.
      • Board voted unanimously to remove the term limits.

  • Topic # 3: Financials (Christine)
    • Discussion – Christine shared 2023 Financial Statement. $20,852.41 balance as of meeting but we are waiting on Light Fees and Out of County player fees. Christine will contact Frank Casper for out of county headcount. Mike will contact Synaiyes about Light Fees. Bottom line is that the league is financially healthy.

  • Topic # 4: Jim Smith Sportsmanship Award (Harvey)
    • Discussion – Harvey will draft a memo and send to Frank. Frank will forward to the general membership.
       
  • Topic # 5: 2023 Season Recap/Any Issues (Rick and Ron)
    • Discussion – Ron Petre emphasized importance of having six (6) teams to round out the league equally. Recruitment needs to be stepped up. 55 and older communities, Gwinnett County Parks & Rec website were offered as suggestions.
    • Rick commented that fielding four (4) teams in the fall was very tough, especially when it came to teams needing subs.

  • Topic # 6: League Membership Meeting
    • Discussion – Door Prizes. Gary M is in charge of collecting the swag.
    • Discussion – Special Recognitions at the annual meeting. Ed Brown.

  • Topic # 7: Team Sponsors 2024 (Gary) (no issues)
    • Discussion – Mike will follow up with Gary M. Gary missed the meeting due to a pre-planned trip out of the country.

  • Topic # 8: Umpire Crew 2024
    • Discussion – David said Jim (umpire from several years back) will be the 2nd umpire for 2024.

  • Topic # 9: Meeting Space for Annual Meeting
    • Discussion – We are verified for Shorty Howell Park on Saturday Dec 9 th . Rick Rhodes will investigate the community center at George Pirce Park to see if it’s a good fit for our membership.

Ad Hoc Agenda Items:

 

  • Determine the future of females being able to hit the small ball in the American League going forward in 2024. Suggestion is to add this topic to the American League breakout session at the Annual Meeting.
  • Memorial Tournament – Great job by Tommy Wiggins for running the 2023 event. Motion to have Doris Warpole work exclusively on the Memorial Tournament for 2024 and going forward as long as she is willing.

  • One new folding wagon for 2024. Jim Hannah purchased one last week.
