2013 Jim Smith Sportsmanship Award Winner
Marty Simmons

Marty epitomizes the very essence of this award. He is a great ball player and that skill is exceeded by the class and character he projects on and off the field. When I first joined the league 8 years ago, Marty was among the first to welcome me and I have seen him repeat that welcome to many others since then.
I have had the privilege of playing with and against him and have had the good fortune of drafting him when I was a manager. A testament to his likeability has been heard at many drafts, when at the mention of this name, there is a chorus of “he’s a great guy” from those in attendance.
When I reflect back on our 2 previous recipients of this ward and on the man for whom it is dedicated, what stands out to me is the respect and appreciation these players attract with their good natured and amicable personalities. Marty comes from that same mold.
So there you have it – class, charisma, talent and a considerate demeanor combine to make Marty an obvious choice for this prestigious honor!
