2014 Jim Smith Sportsmanship Award Winner
Peter Mariolis

Sportsmanship: Webster’s defines it as fair play, respect for opponents, and polite behavior by someone who is competing in a sport. They might just as well post a picture of Peter Mariolis beside the definition.
Pete’s skills as a player are well known in this league. This year his smooth and productive swing in the American League earned him the moniker, “Mr. Automatic”, something the National League has known for years. Beyond the skills, though, is a quiet, unassuming gentleman. A guy with great will and determination, and one who respects his opponents, supports his teammates, and plays the game with youthful enthusiasm.
Pete has contributed to the success of our league in many ways, including as a player, a coach, a board member, and a figurehead of positive influence amongst our new members. He is always there when the current board needs a helping hand, and his support is always a welcome benefit to the goals we set out to achieve.
I am proud to have played with, for, and against Peter. Whatever the situation, his character is tantamount to that of a prominent leader; one we can be content to have as a pillar of our league. It is with great respect that I nominate Peter Mariolis for the Jim Smith Memorial Sportsmanship award.
