Jim Smith 2015

2015 Jim Smith Sportsmanship Award Winner

Emmett Vollenweider

The Jim Smith Sportsmanship Award is given annually to a worthy recipient, nominated by any league member, and then voted on by the Board of Directors.  Anyone lucky enough to have known Jim, as I did, knows and appreciates the value and the impact of this prestigious honor.

This year, I would like to nominate Emmett Vollenweider for this award.  A true southern gentleman, Emmett never has a harsh word for anyone. He is a class act in every sense.

When I first joined the league 10 years ago, Emmett was already firmly entranced as one of the league pioneers and a symbol of longevity and heralded performance.  A testament to his likeability has been heard over and again, on the field, and at many drafts, when, at the mention of his name, there is a chorus of “what a great guy”, or words of similar praise. Emmett loves the game, appreciates the competition, and honors both with his integrity and sportsmanship.

Emmett is a natural athlete who has competed in the State and National Senior Olympics for the past 20+ years in multiple events. This past year he took gold medals in his age group for the long jump, 50 Meter run, 100 meter run and the 200 meter run! He has also won several awards playing softball, including being honored with induction into the Senior Softball HOF in 1998!

When I reflect back on our previous recipients and on the man for whom this award is dedicated, what stands out to me is the respect and admiration these players have attracted with their good natured and amicable personalities. Emmett comes from that same mold.
