When I entered the league in 2013 it was immediately clear to me that
this was a league of players who love to play ball. I felt welcome among
this group of fellers that still had the desire to knock it around.

Soon after joining I had the pleasure of being teamed up with my
nominee. He personifies what I believe to be the best in what I value in a
ballplayer. He is always at every game regardless of how well his team
may be doing in the standings. He has a smile that says playing is the
ultimate pleasure in life.

I watched as he flashed the leather with incredible plays in the outfield
along with some very timely hitting. He is a great teammate with a never
quit attitude. He is a calming influence on those of us who are wound a
little tight during games, especially myself.

I've enjoyed being on teams with him, not so much when I have played
against him. He gives extra time to the league by being available as a sub
when needed and is just a great representative of our league. He may be
small in stature, but he has a huge heart.

My nominee for the 2023 Jim Smith Award is Jose Pena.
