After taking his son to play in Germantown in 1978, Denzil Matthews decided it was time to bring youth football to the Linganore Area. So in 1979, Matthews formed the 1st Flag Football team for Linganore Youth Football. Games were played on land donated from Wilcoms near the 75/80 race way. The 1st year was a struggle to get started and to keep the players interested. Not even a full season was played, but it was the start of Linganore Youth Football.
At the same time, the need for a tackle football feeder program for Linganore High School (LHS) arose.
So with the help of LHS staff, Dave Carruthers and John Grim, LHS Boosters President, Mac McCalla, and other area members who ran successful programs, Don Cline (traveling basketball and baseball) and Frank Krauch (Green Valley Area Citizens Association – GVACA) they formed the Linganore Area Youth Athletic Association (LAYAA). In 1980 LAYAA played in the Carroll County Football League (CCFL) and fielded a Varsity and Junior Varsity team. Linganore Youth Football’s 1st Varsity team was coached by Ralph Fitzgerald. The 1st Junior Varsity team was coached by Denny Tressler. The 1980 Varsity team struggled through a rough season, but they fought. The 1st Linganore touchdown was scored by Arnie McGaha during one of the last games of the season against Winfield. (McGaha is currently an active member in the LOUYAA community for youth sports)
In 1981, Linganore joined the Mountain Valley Youth Football League (MVYFL). With the help of Krauch, Linganore was able to form a Pony team in 1982. Also in 1982, Linganore’s JV team was the MVYFL super bowl runner up and went on to win the MVYFL super bowl the following year at the Varsity level in 1983 (looking for team picture). Matthews still has Linganore’s 1st Varsity Super Bowl trophy (pictured right) at his house along with other family memorabilia. Krauch went on to server as the MVYFL president in 1986. Linganore went on to win another MVYFL Super Bowl in 1986 (looking for team picture) at the varsity level.
