Indianapolis, IN. the American Basketball Association (ABA)
www.abalive.com today announced a campaign to help eliminate bullying in grade, middle and high schools. "Bullying has become an epidemic at all three levels and the effort to eliminate it has been lacking," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "Kids are being terrorized on school buses and in schools and very little is being done to protect them.
"Statements like 'kids will be kids' are ridiculous. Teachers say that it is the parents' problem; parents say it is the teachers' problem. Meantime, the effects it is having on the kids is devastating - leading to depression, increased drug use, early sex, lower grades, and in come cases, suicide. Enough is enough!
Kids need protection from bullies and bullies need to learn very quickly that bullying will not be tolerated.
Hitler and the Nazis were bullies, Mao and Stalin were bullies, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are bullies.
A seven foot center that thats a shot at a six foot point guard is a bully. Bullies are Cowards! They are anything but strong. The ABA will devote its time, energy and resources to help develop programs to protect our kids. This is not a matter of 'kids will be kids.' This is a matter of those people in a position to make a change avoiding their responsibility.
I heard a school administrator say, "We can't make a big deal about it; attendance and penalities could affect our funding." Funding is a reason not to stop bullying and easing the pain vulnerable kids are experiencing? That is a joke.
ABA players and coaches will be visiting schools and youth organizations providing mentorship with a focus on good citizenship and the negative effects of bullying; they will show that Bullies are Cowards ! and are not to be admired, but rather pitied for their lack of character and development. There is nothing "cool" about being a bully. This is only the beginning. We are asking parents, teachers, school administrators, students and all concerned people to join with us and help stop the bullying and protect our children."
