Lady Dolphins win two straight to open season
Danielle Blunt scored a combined 31 points in her first two college basketball games last week. Both were BCC wins

Last Tuesday night’s women’s basketball game at Brunswick Community College produced a barrage of easy lay-ups late in the second half of a game long decided. In 2009 BCC bore the brunt of those indignities but the Lady Dolphins were dishing them out for a change last week.
Ashlyn Burke’s much-improved club clouted the visiting Mt. Olive College junior varsity squad 76-39. Danielle Blunt led the Lady Dolphins with 19 points and Chelsea McGowan added 18 as BCC opened the season with a lopsided win.
But don’t think for one second Burke has forgotten what it feels like to get blown out.
“I told their coach I’ve been there,†said Burke knowingly.
BCC finished last season with a 4-18 record and there were quite a few games that didn’t end soon enough for the Lady Dolphins.
But that was last year and the team has a new outlook this season. BCC added to their initial success with another home win on Saturday, that time beating Caldwell Community College 75-49. It was the first two-game win streak in program history and has the team already halfway to last season’s win total.
Burke’s crew has been practicing for over a month, so Tuesday’s first competitive action of the year couldn’t come soon enough.
“We were all ready. Today I was a nervous wreck,†admitted Burke. “But now we’re in it. Tomorrow we come in here and practice and then we play again on Saturday. We’re in full swing now, which is good.â€
After weeks of practice, BCC was ready to let loose and it showed. The Lady Dolphins played with gusto and built a commanding 33-13 lead by the half. McGowan was central to all of the Lady Dolphins’ offensive success and the early going proved that was a trend to follow. She buried a baseline jumper with soft touch and then drew the defense before lobbing out to Julia Crews for an unfettered three-point knockdown. Less than a minute into the ballgame, Mt. Olive trailed 7-0 and called timeout as a result.
The Trojans though could not stem the rising BCC tide. McGowan scored twice from offensive rebounds and Willetta McIntyre fed Blunt for an acrobatic finish and a 15-5 lead.
McIntyre got some help in the playmaking category from Emily Schweer, a lefty freshman from Iowa. She haunted the foul line and found plenty of operating room in which to work, whether driving and shooting or finding her teammates in better positions.
