101 Starz and the Wild Card Starz showcased the growth and maturity of the Oak Park Eagles Lacrosse program this week end at Sonoma State University in the Annual Adrenaline Shoot Out. Both teams competed in the Championships. Every July the Starz Lacrosse Club and other lacrosse clubs field teams to compete at the highest level in front of college recruiters. The Conejo Valley has successfully assembled talent (Conejo All-Stars) to participate each summer. Last year the "101 Elite Starz" (previously known as the "XL Elite Starz") won their division. This summer the "Elite 101 Starz" included mostly Eagles. One recent Eagle grad, Corey Whelan, was included on the exclusive 'Wild Card' team, coached by beloved Arizona coach, Mike "Pappi" Weine. Other OP teammates, Grayson Phillips, Ryan Darling, Matt Caspari, Eric Albers, Joey Carpenter, & Trevor Goehring made the trip North with the "101 Elite Starz". "101 Elite Starz" had a good showing this summer despite missing a few key players. Made up of 2 divisions, the 'Adrenaline' and 'South Swell' divisions, the "Wild Card Starz" are in the Adrenaline division, while "101 Elite Starz", in the South Swell division. "Wild Card Starz" took 2nd in the finals loosing in overtime 7-8 to Oregon's All-Star team, the "Rhino-Bloodsharks". "Wild Card Starz" record ended at 4-3-1. "101 Elite Starz" finished 4-2-2 with a 1 point loss in the quarter finals 8-9, also in overtime. The Adrenaline Shoot-Out selects an All-Star Roster by division, showcasing the best players of the tournament for college recruiters in an All-Star Game (Committed Seniors such as those on the Wild Card Starz are not allowed to participate). Oak Park was honored with All-Star Team selections for rising Seniors, Grayson Phillips & Matt Caspari. Both are being heavily recruited by schools across the country. Both Phillips and Caspari also participated in the West Coast Starz tournaments on the east coast a few weeks back. Senior Corey Whelan made a big defensive impact for the Wild Card helping them to the Finals ending his Starz Club career as he heads to Staten Island to play for the Division 1 Wagner Seahawks in August.
